2010 2500 ram trans???
ok looking for someone that knows more than me.
i have questions about the new 2010 ram 2500's
what upgrades have been done to there trans, on the hemi engine ones
I have had 2 , an 04, and a 06, and all of them, the trans seems outdated!
shift points are all off, and
I think the 5.7 makes power in the wrong rpm's to make the truck take hills with a load/trailer
so before I buy a 2010, I would like to hear from some guys that have had 2004 and newer( in 05 they changed trans I know, but don't know of any changes since 2006!) 3/4 ton's ram's
and now have a 2010
what they like and don't!
I test drove one, and didn't think it ran any different power wise or shift wise, than my 06, but thats with an empty truck, so don't know if with a load i would feel a difference
( I also test drove a 2010 tundra, and it was a whole different truck, seems to have a lot more power, and shift better)
but been loyal to dodge for 7+ trucks now!!
thanks guys! all feed back will be appreciated!
Minus buy the CTD( just too much for my wallet, but if I had the$$$ I'd have one)

I posted some comments in the other thread you started. I see that you're looking at 3/4 ton. While Tundra has a great drive train (that 6 speed does make a huge difference) keep in mind Tundras are only 1/2 ton. Therefore the comparison does not make much sense to me. If you don't need the extra capacity 2500 provides, then you should be looking into 1500 and then compare with the tundra. just my $0.02
I don't think they made any powertrain changes to the new heavy-duties as far as transmissions go. I believe its the same automatic transmission and the g-56 6-speed manual.
Not sure if you can get the Hemi with the manual 6-spd anymore though...
Not sure if you can get the Hemi with the manual 6-spd anymore though...
the only 2500 with a 6 speed in the cummins equipt one's
the hemi's have the 5 speed, they upgraded from a 4 speed in 2005, this I know, I had an 04, and swapped it for an 06 hoping it would be a lot better, but its not, some yes, but very little
I again, am comparing to the tundra, because if you read up on it, it is almost a 3/4 ton truck, set up like I was looking it is very close will tow 10,500+ lbs( I don't go that heavy if i did, I'd have CTD!)
payload, is a 1200 lbs off or so, so I loose there!
but all else its pretty close( maybe 600 lbs lighter on the curb, maybe thats were there better gas mph comes in)
The tundra, has a bigger engine, and make more Hp,( only a little) so dodge looses there!
what i am looking for is someone to answer is if they know if the 2010, 2500's have better trans, or a different trans than my 06!
and if anyone here has a 2010, 2500, and real world likes dislikes!
and are ball joints still a problem( every 3/4 ton 2500 I owned, they went bad every 30-36,000 miles) I have had 7 different one's now!, and there are tons of others with this probelm!
I can get a tundra for 10 grand less!
and that bothers me!
it seems like a solid truck!, and is darn close on the stas!
SO!, where is the savings, thats a lot!
or where is dodge over charging??
got to be one or the other!

"what i am looking for is someone to answer is if they know if the 2010, 2500's have better trans, or a different trans than my 06!"
I believe that the transmissions are the same in the new 2010 as your 2006 model like I said above.
I believe that the only change in the HD transmissions for 2010 is that the manual 6spd is NOT offered with the Hemi Engine, like it was in past models like mine.
Also- I thought that Tundra had a 5.7 in it as well. Or maybe i'm thinking of the Nissan version.
The 10k that your saving is most likely due to that Tundra does not have nearly as heavy duty axles, brakes, frame, and transmission. The tundra does not have a solid front axle, as a 2500 Ram would, also I believe it's transmission is not as strong as the HD rams, and does not have the payload a HD ram would offer.
If your comparing a Tundra to a 3/4 ton pickup- they are two completely different vehicles.
If you want similar pricing and payloads- you should be comparing the tundra to a 1/2 ton pickup.

you are comparing dodge's stats to tundra's hearsay. what people do with their trucks is one thing, what they are designed for is another. tundra is 1/2 ton period. does it have safety margin, yes it does, but so does 2500 so I'm sure you could load it even more than on the paper. Then again, you may not need that extra capacity but that why the price goes up.
well thanks guys for the feedback
I know I am comparing a 1/2 to 3/4,
and i also know there are load and some stats that are different because of that.
My point is, that ON PAPER the tundra in a double cab long bed, is very much a 3/4 ton truck, now don't take that wrong, a 3/4 ton truck will have more abilities! and weights it will hold,' but a tundra will hold and carry 3/4 a ton!
thus a 3/4 ton truck, that is what use to make them, than long ago, all the makes started to add weight abilities, and now them numbers are all messed yup( chevy HD"S I think started the jump, and all the others fell in line to out do each others 1/2 ton!)
ANd as for the tundra not having a solid front axle, neither does GM products on the 3/4-1 tons!
so that doesn't mean its not up to the task, based on JUST that!
Again, I was looking for Trans info, and info in general that have a 2010 2500 ram, and had either a older post 06, 2500, or a tundra.
to compare real seat likes or dislikes!
On paper lots of things are CRAP, and in real world , they can fall apart!
I have now owned 7+ dodge 3/4 ton's, and on paper they all claim to be great tow rigs, sure they handle the weight no problem, but they all sucked on a hill and terrible gas milage ( sure all v8's do, but on paper they claim other wise!, see!!!)
and let me tell you, the tundra's frame is very beefy, heavest of all 1/2 tons, again, to meet 3/4 ton spec's!
and it has the same sized braks as the ram's 2500
14 incher!
so its a darn close there!
and having 4.30 differentials, there pretty strong gears!, as for the axle its self, that I don't know, but if its rated for the weight, it cannot be too bad!
So when you look closer at the tundra, and keep an open mind,
and then you see the $10,000.00+ price difference, you have to wonder!!
I have been to many tundra forum sites, and have not heard any real complaints, and gas mph,. is on average still better than I get in my 2500's!
and I don't hear anyone with any common problems, just the odd ones here and there like all trucks have!
where as on my dodges, and many other, all seem to have balll joint problems!
and don't forget the HEMI tick! that is in most
So I am on the fence
seems like 90% of guys on here have 1/2's, and thus no REAL imput on a 2500
just to keep telling me I am comparing apple to oranges(1/2-to-3/4 ton)
I know this I am not stipid!
just saying, the tundra is pretty beefy, and CLOSE to rams 250's
and for saving $10 grand, shoul;d I maybe switch!!
since Dodge seems to be sitting on there *** in up dating ther drivetrail on the 3/4 tons
sure they do tons to there 1/2 ton! but what hjave they done to there 3/4 ton, beside change sheet metal, and add some new body mounts! which is trivial too me!
ask your self this, why is the same hemi( only with less HP) in a 3/4 ton truck that weight almost 1/2 a ton more!
why not put in or have an option for the 6.1 hemi in a 3/4-1 ton!!
dodge is the only company on the market that doesn't have a bigger gas engine for an option, since they did away with the V-10!
long time to do nothing!!
where as TOYOTA, needs to up date often, to stay in the game!! like all 1/2's!
and BY law, they were forbiden to make a 3/4 ton trucks
it was an american trade aggrement with foriegn owned companys not to compete in that market( this may have passed, but its why they didn't for years!)
Or I think all USA companys would be in touble in this market class!
toyota is the largest auto maker in AMERICA, has to be some reason!
they passed all are USA companys!

This is from Motor-Trend:
Dodge got impressive reviews and applause from the public when the 2009 Dodge Ram came out. It was redesigned, luxurious, and powerful. Well now the 2010 Dodge Ram is here and, though not much has changed from the previous year, we do know that an increase in towing is a big hit.
The Toyota Tundra has seen its share of problems but has also been recognized as a firm competitor to the Detroit Three. So as these two trucks rise to victory, which would you rather have??
The 2010 Dodge Ram comes with a 390-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 while the 2010 Toyota Tundra comes with a 4.6-liter V8 producing 310 horsepower, 327 lb-ft OR their 5.7-liter V8 producing 380 horsepower.
^ The Ram has more HP and Torque. So if you think the HEMI is not enough power for you, then obviously the Tundra isn't going to be much better.
HEMI 5.7 390HP > Tundra 5.7 381HP
A 3/4 will have a lot stronger axles for towing. If 4x4 a HEMI 2500 would have a 10.5 rear axle (3.73 gears stock/ Could get 4.10) and a 9.25 in the front. (Cummins would have 11.5 i believe in the rear)
Your Tundra would have a MUCH smaller axle than the HD's

I don't think you are going to get a lot of 'buy a Tundra' over here. We have one at work, it does not get the best mileage when towing. It towed a Wrangler to Moab and got like 6-7 mpg - not good. So, after driving one quite a bit, I bought an 09 Dodge 1/2 ton. There have also been Chevy's and Fords here... #2 choice would be a Chevy (atleast for me).
I see what you are saying about they are pretty close... the 1/2-3/4 ton trucks. If you took a new 1/2 ton and compared it a 3/4 ton from 10 years ago... you'd be choosing a 2010 half ton from pretty much any of the manufacturers over the old 3/4 ton.
