I've never heard of this problem with the Ram. The year of the Ram comes into play on what kit to get, just go to HIDextra.com. They have the HID thing nailed down, they helped me after going through 4 "plug and play" crap kits. And I wouldn't run 12K, they should look purple if they are 12K. These arent necessarily brighter, it has to do with the light spectrum and how your eyes recieve and see the true light. I ended up on some science website when I was looking for HIDs and it covered that topic. If you want bright light with little color distortion similar to what high end cars use (AUDI,BMW,LEXUS etc.) go with 6000K. Their brighter than high end OEM hids and if you get lows and fogs you'll be amazed. As for your buddies Ranger, well he bought a Ford so thats a problem from the start.

Canadian DRL's always on in gear, off with active turn signal.
