Default Help, Upgrading MTX thunderform speakers

So I got the MTX thunderform box amped and loaded. The mtx thunderform speakers that it came with seem very hollow sounding. They sound like sheet. I researched them and they are around fifty bucks a speaker. Very cheap

So I am looking into swapping out the 10s with eithor the JL 10W3

OR... I have always like the Infinity brand for their mids and highs but have never heard any of their subs.

Please ... Someone give me some feedback on this.
Thanks. Wes

Default subwoofers

are very dependent on the amount of space the box provides them. a great woofer can sound poor in the wrong size enclosure and a cheaper woofer sound great in the right enclosure. bottom line is that it is not just the size of the speaker but the cubic feet of the box and if the woofers you are looking at dont match up it is a waste.

I have 1.5 cubic ft in this box and both subs listed meet that spec and also fit depth wise. I also tried calling mtx to see if the subs are 2 or 4 ohm. but they are closed. Anyone help me on that before I pull a multimeter out?

To a certain extent what Pacific NW guy said was true, but I would definitely go with the JLs.

take the mtx subs out.. i believe on the back the say .7 ohms if i remember correct.. which means they prolly wired them inseries to get a1.5 ohm load to the internal amp... but they are DVC so... maybe it was .7 per coil... i dunno 4 sure

you dont say if you have the amplified version like i do or stockers.... so again i sugjest taking the subs out to check them out for sure.

i too was consider the JL w3s... but for the price and my typical listening levels i figured the RE subs would do me well.. i had a 12w7 in my f150 and that was waaaay to much for me...

if you have the amped version you might want to upgrade that as well.. i added a pdx 600 class d amp... overall it hits a lot harder and sound much better

Thanks Doc. I do have the amped version. I am leaning toward the JL 10 w 3's. Would I want the 2 ohm or the 4 ohm. Not sure what the difference is. All I know is the thunder 4500 suck and sound super hollow to me. Could I run the JL's with this lil amp or should I upgrade? If so what would be better and I would need something compact as I would only be running the subs off the amp and am cramped for space. Also I really dont think these a dual voice coil subs... But I could be wrong
Thanks

Wes

if you plan on running your subs at 2 ohm i would suggest you get two 4 ohm subs and run them in parallel.

im not sure if you want to add an amp or not but there is not much room back there if you mount them under the seat. if you try to mount them on the back wall you would have more room.. but thats a lot of work.

my pdx.1.600 is crazy small for a 600 watt amp.. its a class d so that helps.. and it barley fits under the seat. in fact the is a metal something INSIDE the seat underneath that indented my amp top when i put the seat down.. luckily my stereo shop likes me and replaced the lid for free immediately.. but we had to push the amp deeper back.

everything depends on your budget and what you want out of it.. if your wanting nice sound or shake the house...

you could get the 10w3s and stick a jl 1000 watt amp if you really wanted to push it... but thats up to you

ok doc, I pulled my subs and on the back it says 0.07 ohms 100watt on both of them. I tried looking at the wiring to the amp but it looks like I would need to unhook everything to pull the lil amp out. Would you know how it is wired since you upgraded yours? Could I just pull these subs and drop in others and not have to worry about re-wireing the amp. I would love to drop an amp as well but I am running into another problem. I am currently pulling signal off the rear channels and am not running a remote wire to my factory hu. The amp turns on and off just by the signal to the rear speakers. I also have the remote bass hooked dial up as well. If I were to upgrade the amp I would need to be able to accomdate all of this or i would be in for some major work. I also noticed that I only had a single posotive and negative coming out of each sub. Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like I am running 4 ohms from the amp and 2 ohms at each sub. Maybe this is in a parellel format but I think may would be a series format. take a look at crutchfields diagram.

Thanks doc
