Default MyGig RER w/nav for $500?

I have the opportunity to buy a RER MyGig from a 2008 Rubicon (P05064245) for $500. I think this is a good find but wanted to run it by you guys. What do you think?

Thanks,
John

Not bad, but seeing the NAV maps in my 2010 Jeep are outdated already I would spend the 500 on a top of the line Garmin or whatever if you are mainly buying it for the NAV. You may also have to install a NAV antenna.

If I had it to do all over again, I would skip the RER and go with the non-Nav (RBZ I think). Like kpevin said the maps are out of date and I haven't found a way to update them yet. I've heard they've got a RER replacement coming out of the 2011s that have Garmin as the Nav built into the unit and it'll be updateable.

And with Garmin units (like a Nuvi) you can get a "lifetime" map update subscription for like $99 or less. I have the RBZ and a Nuvi 855, with traffic, lifetime maps, red light/speed camera alerts, and gas prices, etc. That's a much cheaper way to go, but you do have that unit sitting on the dash...

I don't see the big deal about the maps being out of date since they are out of date every year. If you are using it for navigation to 100 main street what difference does it make if you get there with a 2010 map or a 2011 map. POI's will change quicker than streets but even they don't turn over every year. Unless you have specific needs I doubt you will notice any problems if you never update the map as long as you own the vehicle.

yea, unless you GPS still thinks the highway around your house is closed for construction and it was finished and open two years ago lol.

But IMO the RER is a pretty crappy NAV overall, not just the outdated maps, a 200.00 Garmin kicks its rear except its smaller. You can even do cool things like enter a destination while driving, have a GPS speed display, have street speed limits displayed, 3d buildings, faster reroutes, continuous mile/ft display of upcoming turns among other things.

If you want to update the maps on the mygig you can buy the CDs here for 199.00:

I have a lifetime for both my Garmins (99.00 each), they may be out of date by a year but its better that paying 200.00 for a 2 year old map. But if you a 'built in' kind of guy the RER is an OK NAV, but like any other OE audio component its a few years behind the curve.
