I think you guys are missing the point. I could give a rat's *** about $4. I don't like being stolen from, period. And the argument about removing anything of value before taking the truck in is asinine. Does that mean if I forget to strip anything of value out of my truck before I drop it off it's fair game to be stolen?

Actually, yes. FWIW even your truck is "fair game" to be stolen, whether it's at a dealership or not. No one likes to have their stuff stolen, so you're not unique in that aspect. This isn't about who is right or who's wrong, it's not about who is responsible. It's about simple common sense & knowing that prevention is better than cure. Some dealerships/repair shops can't park every vehicle indoors to protect our property. Some aren't even fenced in. Are you relying on them to keep your stuff safe? If you are, not to be name-calling, but you'd be pretty naive.

The DEALER is like any other business. He doesn't want thieves, drunks, druggies etc.for employees. But it happens. The tech I had robbing banks during lunch. It blew us away.Said he did it for the thrill, not the money.

Naive? Maybe. But is it unreasonable to assume some level of responsibility on the part of the dealer when a vehicle is in their care? It wasn't like I had the truck parked in the hood with the windows down.

Again, I could give a **** about the money. I just hate thieves.

Maybe I need to get a hidden camera setup like this guy.

I hate thieves also. I do work in a rich area and they leave there jewels and cash out in the open. I can't have any of my employees stealing. Before I start the job I explain to them that my reputation would be tarnished if anything goes missing and I also tell them that they would have to settle with me because calling the police at that point would be useless.

I was in the auto service business for over 50 years. We never had a mechanic steal anything as petty as a few coins. On the other hand, lot parkers steal anything thats not bolted down. We did have mechanics the stole the car.

Come on it just makes common sense in this day and time to take your valuables out of your vehicle. There are signs at the dealership warning you to take valuables same at car wash places.....and even oil change places all have signs saying they are not responsible for any valuables left in the vehicle by the person. My wife was a valet at a Casino and on the stub they gave the person whos car they are parking states that the Casino is not responsible for any valuables left in the car, even though they will most likely cover the cost, then investigate the employees. So lets all just be smart and prevent it from happening. We are all looking for waying to make up for the money we lose daily due to taxes, price increases, THEFT, what can we do? I think if you went to the Service Manager and told him what had happened instead of being a doorknob and go yelling in the area where other customers are you would get your money back and probably a few oil changes and well, they know who was working on your vehicle so....you see where I am going?

+1

Go buy a Jeep with a soft top - or no top. You get used to making sure nothing valuable is inside real quick. People suck.
