suspension vs body lifts
i have a 09 TRX 4X4 that im intrested in lifting. i know i want a 4" to 6" suspension lift but my funds are somwhat limited. expecially considering rims and tires would go along with it. ive noticed a few ppl are going with leveling kits and body kits. i would like to know the pros and cons of goin with body and leveling kits vs suspension kits. any advice would be greatly appreciated
You will get lots of opinions here. Many people are dead set against body lifts, but there are good points to them. Obviously, a body lift only lifts the body, therefore only giving you the extra ground clearance that your tires provide. A suspension lift will get the frame higher as well. But, the rear axle is the low point and will be the same height with either. If you have a Crew Cab , the extra frame height can be nice to help not get high centred. That really depends though on how agressive you get.
One benefit to a body lift versus a suspension lift is that the frame and engine all stay low and keep the centre of gravity down versus lifting it all with a suspension lift. A body lift also keeps the ride stock, many suspension lifts will firm or soften up the ride. Sometimes that can be good, other times is can be bad.
Alot of people will tell you that body lifts can bust the bolts or mounts. In my experience, I have never had an issue. I installed a body lift in a 3/4 ton truck to keep the COG low and the suspension at stock 3/4 ton since I hauled a LARGE slide in camper. The camper never one shifted the blocks or bolts. No issues and I ran that thing on some nasty roads.
So, they both give you room for larger tires. The suspension lift can give you more travel, the body lift give you a lower COG.
