yeah sounds like you have a restriction somewhere in the trans cooling lines. But that is absolutely untrue that you are pulling too much weight. I would ask them for a copy of the email where the engineers said 6000 was too heavy. Or better yet make them call while you are there so you can listen to the conversation.

yes we always use tow haul mode =/ it's been very frustrating and we agree it's likely a new transmission or full replacement needed.
Sounds like a load of crap. Just print out the tow rating for them and ask them why the manual says you can tow 8400lbs. My 09 with 3.21 gears tows 6K effortlessly without the tranny temp going out of a normal range and 6K is the top of the rating for my truck.

it is a load of crap and i'm exhausted from dealing with it. i have enough in email to prove he's wrong, now we begin the fight. my dry weight is 5,300 approximately. I have an email were he tells us we can tow 8,250. what is interesting is i have 3 different perspectives now on what we should be able to tow, lowest is 7,500 so we should still be good! more to come

oldjeep: My 09 with 3.21 gears tows 6K effortlessly
I'm just about convinced that 3.21 gears might be better than 3.92's for towing less than 6,000lbs.

Even with 3.92's the tranny is probably going to be downshifting to 3rd during even the slightest uphill grades. My 3.55 usually skips from 5th to 3rd - bypassing 4th....even with Superchips tranny tuning installed.

May as well remain in 3rd full time with the 3.21's.

3rd gear @ 65mph with 3.21 = 2210rpm
3rd gear @ 65mph with 3.55 = 2450rpm
3rd gear @ 65mph with 3.92 = 2700rpm

Range sounds about right for towing up a hill. Most everything around here is pretty flat, so it is happy to stay in the high gears most of the time.

I've got a trip to Montana coming up Saturday towing about 3500lbs (small car on a dolly) plus maybe another 600 in the bed. I'll have to pay attention to what it is doing. Going across North Dakota I generally run 80 in OD with this load unless the wind is against me. If the wind comes up I need to put it in Tow/Haul and definitly have it there when I hit the Montana border.

I tow with 3.21 and haul around 3500 # high profile trailer (plus assorted other gear) another several hundred pounds fairly easily. In tow/haul, in the flats and without headwinds the truck will actually go into 5th and not have any problems. Going up long grades and with strong head winds the truck will struggle to stay even in 3rd (rare but it will happen). When this happens, I either try to stay in 3rd but I have to go faster then 65 to get more RPMs and get into the higher torque of the motor. When it does kick down to 2nd, I slow down to between 55MPH and 60MPH and run about 2900 - 3000 RPM. At this point there is plenty of torque. I just don't like running that high RPM for any extended period.

I think for myself, I would like the 3.55 but I don't need it with the setup I have. When I am not towing, I love the 3.21 fuel economy on the highway.

Thanks for all the info to all!

Another thing we are wondering is what temperature the tranny should be at before going into limp. We have experienced it at temps all over the place including 192, 203 and the dealer at 217. 192 seems very low based on all we have heard and seen and even 203?

thanks!
Michelle

I've experienced 210 deg for up to 2 hours without the tranny going into limp mode.

I prefer the 3.92 gears I have. When towing my pontoon boat it will stay in 5th on every thing but the steeper grades, and in 4th it will gain speed on every hill I've encountered even with out the torque converter locking out.As for the temperature, the highest my truck has shown is 179 while pulling my boat with the outside temperture at 103 degrees.

Thanks to both of you for the replies. I guess my last question is does anyone know if there should be information recorded in the computer somewhere when it does go into limp mode?
