Default Will this work?

A friend of mine is taking his 08 Ram back and he has the Super Chips tuner for it. If he turns his truck back to stock will this tuner work on my 09?

Probably... the gas motors share most programmers for those years... it would help if it was a cortex 3950 or flashpaq 3865... both those work for both year 1500s.

As long as his truck has the 5.7L Hemi it will. The Flashpaq model is the same for 03-10 Rams and the Cortex is the same for 04-10 Rams. Check out their site and look up the models to confirm for yourself. Rob

me, i dont think it will work. once you plug it in with his truck info on it to update through the site, his VIN is locked in for that programmer. you would have to get the programmer erased which will cost more money. to get one for yours only, you would have to bu a new one that will then have only your VIN locked in registered for that specific programmer.

It will work fine Marine...

The way tuners work is that they have two memory areas... stock tune and aftermarket tune. When you plug it in the first thing it does is download the stock tune into the empty area on the tuner, then it wipes the stock tune off of the truck and then it copies the aftermarket tune to the truck.

Now the stock tune area is full. YOu can no longer upgrade a truck unless its vin matches the stock tune stored in the controller. Hoever if you return the truck you tuned back to its stock tune the tuner first wipes the aftermarket tune off of the truck, then copies the oe tune from the tuner to the truck then wipes the oe tune off of the tuner, returning the tuner and the truck to exactly how they were (ok actually there are some changes to the checksum values in the trucks ECU...).

The tuner is no longer locked to the truck as it no longer has a tune in its oe storage area to check vins against.

The only exceptions to this are non generic tuners that you might get from companies like Livernois or VMS where they take your oe tune and tweak it. The hardware works in a different way, and those tuners are permanently locked to a specific vin.

As frogslinger points out, there may be a couple other steps involved but it can be done. The OP asked whether it would work with his truck. My reply was that yes, technically the tuner will work with his model. It's up to him to figure out the process and/or additional fees that might be involved in re-use. Rob

I own a Cortex 3950 that I purchased in early 2009 for my 2005 Dakota 4.7

I have installed various tunes on the Dak and subsequently returned to stock which "UNLOCKS" the Cortex for use on another vehicle.

After purchasing a 2009 Ram Hemi I contacted Superchips via email, performed a FREE online update, hooked up the Cortex to the Ram and it worked flawlessly.

BOTTOM LINE...YES IT WILL WORK ON VARIOUS YEAR MODELS.
