well said S.A.M.! How can it be green when you have to use more to get the equivalent miles, especially if you use e85. Give me Hydrogen and I am sold but don't subsidize something to ram it up my A$$ and tell me its green all the while raising fuel prices and ruining everything from lawn equip. to marine engines in the process, oh it gets better when the tax subsidy runs out and the price jumps, these scumbags are bending us over and making huge profits and its not a demo or repub thing its a world business money thing. Give me my oil till it runs out then switch me over. Guess its okay when they take away the lead out of the bullets and give you plastic and tell you its the green thing to do, you'd buy that, while they are just eating away at your rights in a flanking maneuver.
Personally, I don't feel that the idea of us leaving a little bit of a larger carbon foot print is proposal too absurd. I mean, some of it has been great. Hell, I can't remember the last time I changed a light bulb in this house since converting everything over to a CFL system. In fact, I know the oldest one is five years old and is just now getting to the point where it sometimes comes on and sometimes doesn't.
I like that we are having a somewhat civil debate here, but do tone it down a notch, and if you want to discuss it more, then step on over to off topic and look for our political and religious section. Everything to do with government can be talked about over there as long as everyone acts like an adult.

I read somewhere that if we used 100% of the annual US corn crops for ethanol production (leaving us none for food) it would reduce the annual US oil consumption by between 3% and 4%. Furthermore, they said that we could save that much by simply keeping all the tires inflated to the proper pressure. I have no idea if it's true, but it does make you think!

But, I am of the opinion we must look for alternative fuels while we use fossil fuels. Anyone that thinks fossil fuels will be here indefinitely is just plain simple minded.
It is this exact thinking that got us in this mess to begin with. How much better shape could our country could be in if we had heeded the warnings of the 1970's? Maybe we may have an answer by now. But some of you would rather not even start now.
I never understood buying ethanol. OK yea it is cleaner.
But why would we want to raise the price of Corn that costs us more to put food on the table?
If we did away with ethanol and went back to strait gas our overall cost of living would go down(more mpg's that everyone is raving about and lower cost to feed the family).
Politics are a bitch. Everyone has someone in their pocket with promises.

I apologize if I broke any forum rules or took the issue to far.

I really do think the answer could be in alcohol, but if and only if a motor can be designed to operate on 100% alcohol for extended periods of time with out the need to frequently overhaul the motor. Motors run on 100% eth as it is, but they don't last long... Why? Simply put, Ethanol does not have the lubricating capacities that a petro based gas does.
This is why everyone states that you should not use more than a 10%-15% eth blended fuel. Not only that, but people who have attempted to pull it off seemingly start to have leaks along the fuel system because the alcohol dries the seals out. Been there, done that.
