IMO, it is not just milage to determine oil change intervals. You need to consider type of driving and time. I put less than 7500 miles per year. Many of my miles can be very short trips (1-2 miles, 2-5 miles). Want to compare my oil at 3,000 miles versus someone who runs 3k on the highway? It is pretty dirty at 3k. I will change the oil at 6 months no matter what the milage. That means a whopping 2 oil changes per year. Guess I'm really making the Oil guys rich.

So, my "oil change due" thing always comes on before I reach the mileage or time. I always change it when it tells me to, but is this a waste? Should I just shut it off & wait until I'm at the right mileage, or does it actually sense & know that I should get an oil change? I use Mobil 1.

I just talked to the service guys about this today, because my oil change light came on just after I had it changed. They told me the light timing is based on a number of things but mainly ignition key cycles... so if you do a lot of short trips you'll see the light pop on sooner than if you're racking up highway miles.

He also said there's no way to adjust the cycle, just turn it off when it comes on. Supposedly they're going to provide access to the timer in the '11 models.

For the record, my manual also calls for 6K changes...
