Default synthetic or not?

Hey Gang, My Odomeder just turned 2700 miles and EVIC told me to change oil. I am torn on whether or not to use synthetic on my new 2010 Ram 2500 with the Hemi 5.7. Any advise? Thanks for this great forum!

I put it in at my first change. Been running syn for about 10 years now. Never had an issue, then again, never had an issue with dino oil over the years either. I do go 5K vs 3K when it was dino. But that is the key... Change it when it should be done and whether it is syn or dino it will run a long time.

Agreed, I have been running synthetic oil for at least 15 years now. I own a fast lube/repair shop and always recommend it. Synthetic oil will give you better protection on start up and doesn't break down as fast as conventional oil. I still change oil every 3k. Have had several vehicles hit 200k without any problems, they ran quiet, just like they were new, however the bodies gave out. Synthetic is more expensive than conventional and you still need to change your oil at the vehicles intervals or you will void your warranty. But then on the other side I had a customer that ran his Chevy truck to 380k on conventional oil because he religiously changed oil ever 3k. Had to replace his oil pan because the drain plug was worn out. When I dropped the pan I couldn't believe how clean the motor was. So I guess it depends on how you take care of your truck. Like I said I use synthetic, but conventional can be just as good.

I am sure, twenty years ago or so, when synthetic oil first came to market it was leaps and bounds better than conventional oil. The conventional oil available today has closed the gap, some. Synthetic is still better of course.

With that, I only use synthetic oil (Mobil 1). I feel the technology is available, and still somewhat affordable, so I am taking advantage of it.

I use conventional oil in summer, and synthetic in the winter.Using synthetic oil in the winter helps with start-up,were the most wear occurs.Synthetic oil in the summer is great, but not needed unless the engine is turbo charged, and our Hemi's are not.So conventional is fine in the summer.

I finally started using synthetic at 25k. I ran out of free oil change coupons from the dealer - conventional oil only - and they started sending me $32 oil change coupons. So, I can get a Mopar oil filter and Mobil One synthetic for cheaper than what they are doing it for with conventional, plus this truck is just way too easy to change, less than 15 minutes in the driveway and just give Walmart back the used oil in the same containers I got the new stuff in.
