I compared the MPG(US standard) to the liters per hundred(international standard) fuel consumption numbers and it turns out that mpg value is based on a US gallon. So if this mpg number seems low for you imperial gallon types now you know why.

The formula for the conversion is

mpg = 235.214584 / DIN

DIN is the liters per 100 kilometers

Therefore liters per 100 km = 235.214584 / mpg

I don't know why they didn't just make it km/liter. At least the conversion would be a little easier to manage without a calculator.

Perhaps this is based on the old saying of "why be difficult when with a little effort you can be f''''in impossible."

 

Why convert at all? Just use what you are given. It is all just a measurement of fuel economy, do the units really matter?

Example, 9.5l/100kms is better then 10.2l/100kms.

Just like 23mpg is better then 19mpg.
