Your oil pan already has magnets in it. I've seen them covered in shavings so I would imagine it's helping some by not letting the shavings cycle through the engine. In my opinion, a bigger magnet couldn't hurt, but not for those prices. You can use any magnet so if you really wanted to, you could just find a junk magnet somewhere and clean it up and throw it in your oil pan. The filter magnets I'm not sure about. I definitely wouldn't pay the money for them to find out. I don't think they would help that much, plus engines have been doing just fine with out them.

I wasn't aware that the engine oil pan had a magnet, although I've never replaced one. I am aware that the tranny pan has one, as i've done oil changes on my vehicles' transmissions before. The diff is another story. I'm not even sure it would be worth having a magnet for it or just change the oil frequently. I've never used these types of magnets before was just looking for opinions. I use synthetic oil and do frequent changes, so don't think the engine oil magnet is needed. I read somewhere that some are using rare earth hard drive magnets for this application. Any ideas?

Once upon a time (like twelve years ago), I had an oil filter magnet that I used on my old 2nd gen. Two different times, I cut the oil filter open after it was used to see if it helped, and there definitely was some small pieces of metallic grit stuck to it. I don't know how much that actually helps, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Having said that, though, the one I had was a rubber ring with a couple small magnets in it that fit around the oil filter. I got it from JCWhitney for less than $10, and I'm pretty sure no one makes that kind anymore. There is no way I would pay $60+ for a magnet like those in your link, especially if you're changing your oil regularly.

I use huge earth magnets on BOTH my diff`s and one on the oil filter.
I also have 2 of them stuck to the bottom of my transmission pan as well.
I built a special one for the drain plug on my tranfer case. (installed into the drainplug)
I get my rare earth magnets from work for nothin, and its best money i`ve never spent.
After cutting open oil filters and removing the diff covers thru the yrs, i`m so very glad i use magnets.
I look at it this way, its surely alot less metal fileings being ground up into my engine & tranny & diff gears.

To each their own, but i`ll keep using them until they aren`t free to me anymore, then i just re-use the ones i now have.

These are way way way too pricey...! You can find magnets for pretty much for free most anywhere.
Check with your local music shops, they throw away speakers all the time that have big earth mags.
Just break a piece off from and old speaker, that`ll work just fine.

OK. I'll bite. What is the difference between an, "earth magnet" and a regular one?. Can you tell visibly which is which? Are all speaker magnets earth magnets?

From Wiki..

Rare-earth magnets are strong permanent magnets made from alloys of rare earth elements. Developed in the 1970s and 80s, rare-earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets made, substantially stronger than ferrite or alnico magnets.

I'm not so much interested in these particular items as I am in the use of magnets. I can also get a supply of free magnets from old hard drives and other parts. I'm just curious how many have used them and what their results were. I'm not really looking to install them in a filter or pan but on the exterior. If others have had success then I would consider it for minimal to no cost.
