strong head winds
I have been making some long drives to south Texas lately. Has anyone noticed there milage going into a strong head wind. I had to drive from dallas to galveston 2 weeks ago. The south wind was blowing hard. My milage really went down [16 mpg ] . I try to notice now when I have to drive a long ways , if I have a head wind. Most of the time on long drives , 78 mph I avg 20 to 21 mpg ... will see now. Going to Corpus in 2 weeks .
Of course head winds will adversely affect mileage. They will for any vehicle.
When on the highway the majority of the resistance your engine is working to overcome is from wind resistance. Trucks have around 1.5x the drag coefficient that cars do, so they are affected more.

If you think that a headwind in Texas is bad, try North Dakota in the middle of winter (-15 degrees) with a 45 mph head wind. The best I got was 11 MPG in those conditions. Be happy with 16 man! So long comment short, higher resistance and colder temperatures turn our hemi into a gasoholic!~
On a trip from AZ to CA I battled a strong head wind. Only got about 15mpg doing 70. This is about 3 mpg less than I normally get on the freeway. Pickups still don't get the best mpg. There is a lot of frontal surface area to push through the air.
