It will be hit & miss as long as they have the same vendor building the torque convertors for them. So the answer to your question is, yes, its very possible that it CAN happen. I`m NOT saying that it will, i`m just saying its possible. Personally, i cant wait to see how much trouble the new 2013 ZF 8-speed transmission is going to be, especially behind the hemi. I will bet money, that its going to be a great big headache on its first year out.

Post sounds were about 4 seconds. Once they did the fix, it quit completely.
Dosent sound like yours was a star case issue. It would be interesting to know what fixed it though.

Diagnosis:
Confirm that the noise only occurs while the torque converter is in lock-up at low speeds (around 1400 - 1700 engine RPM) at approximately 45 mph. If the noise is heard while transmission is in partial lock-up at 1400 - 1700 RPM, put the vehicle into ERS - Tow/Haul mode (deactivates MDS and torque converter in full lock-up) If the noise is unchanged, perform the following repair procedure. If the noise goes away in ERS mode, further diagnosis is required. If the noise occurs above 1700 RPM or below 1400 RPM, further diagnosis is required.

Thanks for this thread. I've been experiencing this "rattle" but at low RPMs. I notice it when coasting and it goes away when giving it gas again. It's REALLY noticeable when I'm driving next to a wall having the sound bounce back off it.

Took it to the dealer, they claimed it was a solenoid pack and "fixed it." If I hadn't picked up my truck after hours I would have drove it right back.

I was curious if anyone's experienced this rattle at lower RPMs?? Maybe it's something else?

Steve,
it is very hard to diagnois a problem like this over the internet. If you have access to a very high quality camcorder, get someone to ride with you and do a really good highly detailed video and post it in here.

Dealerships mostly suck today, its hit an miss wherever you go. These vehicles today are alot easier to diagnois, its just that the people working on them today aren`t even qualified enough to even open a jar of peanutbutter. All they do is just bolt **** on until they think they`ve fixed it. We call those kinds of idiots, BOLT-ON-BOYS, (aka BOB`S) which is likely 99.9 percent of the dealer dummies out there today. A real tech would diag/repair it right, the first time. I worked in a dealership years ago, if you had 3 "comebacks" in a year, you were fired on the spot if it was proven your fault for the customer coming back with the same problem or issue. Good techs today are very scarce, mainly because none of us want to work for nothing, so some of us left the automotive world by retiring or finding another profession. I left because i got tired of working with thieves & idiots.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm headed back on Monday and plan to take along a copy of that Star report embedded upthread.

I'll update when/if I have my resolution.

*** Actually, now that I've gone back and re-read the star case, when I can hear the rattle and turn on tow/haul, the rattle goes away. So according to this particular case, it needs further diagnosing.

I've now had a solenoid pack changed on the transmission, a new muffler, and a new tune. All three allegedly "fixed" the issue when in reality none has.

LU229, I think you were right, these folks kinda stink.

Do I ride it out with this dealership to keep throwing ^&(* against the wall and hoping it sticks?

Would you guys head to another dealership?

Using your fist hit the forward (front) bulkhead of the box just behind the cab.

Do you hear a rattle?

Regards,
Dusty

It's back to the dealer, but even though I haven't done it, I'd suspect the answer is no. It really sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment area. They've opened a case with Dodge and apparently are going through their techs on troubleshooting, etc. They said this could take a while.

In the meantime I'm stuck in a damn Camry.

I'm now being told it's the MDS system and the noise is normal. I asked to drive another 2010 on their lot with a tech and service manager. No noise. We all hopped into mine, less than 2 minutes of driving, noise. I do think it's *something* with the MDS system, but it only seems to occur at a certain point while MDS is engaged (coasting, RPMs ~900-1100, <35 mph.) I still don't think the noise is right.

They've offered to have someone from Chrysler come out and ride along with me to listen to the noise. Glad to have the truck back, still frustrated with this noise.

We'll see what happens.
