Star Case - Transmission noise - For those that are still looking for this info
Chrylser tech came out mid August and rode along. At first he claimed he couldn't hear it, I tuned him into it and he said "That's definitely not right."
Got back to the dealer, he called "one of my engine guys" and they decided to "throw some lifters at it and go from there." Didn't exactly install a whole lot of confidence in me.
I again mentioned that I thought it still seemed transmission related but he flat out denied it was anything to do with the transmission. I pick it up tomorrow at noon.
We shall see.

But, then again, lifters are far cheaper than transmissions.
Well I'm beyond livid but for other reasons. The noise really does seem to have died off but while at the dealer, my truck gathered an additional 923 miles.
923!!!!
What the $#!&???
They also never bothered to ask me if I put any particular kind of oil in the vehicle when they drained and replaced my oil. (It's always ran full synthetic since "birth") I'm also skeptical if the reason the noise is gone is because they put a different weight oil in it that turns off the MDS. The only way I'll be able to tell for sure is to replace the oil again on my own tomorrow and see how it drives.
I'll be calling the service manager tomorrow at the *** crack of dawn to ask about the oil AND THE DAMN MILEAGE!!!

holy **** dude, are you fuggin serious.... 923 miles...?!?!?!?!!!!! Good thing it isnt my truck, somebodys azz would get stomped in a heartbeat, thats unacceptable...PERIOD...!!! They likely used YOUR truck to run parts over town an back, went to lunch, took it home and back to work, and at THEY`RE leasure. I`m sure they beat the hell out of it while they were driving it as well. I always tell the dealerships that i write down the miledge and my truck is NOT there for joy rides. I totally understand they have to road test them, but i dont see the point to adding a 1,000 miles to your vehicle, once again, UNACCEPTABLE...! If they cant diagnois a vehicle within 100 miles, they prolly shouldnt be workin on it to begin with.
If they changed your oil, i`d bet they used "BULK" oil out of a drum. The bulk oil they sell around here is $2.25 per quart. So, i ask myself, what kind of oil is this, and why is it so dam cheap. Hmmmmmmmmm, yeah, they`re putting garbage oil in my vehicle. Ther ARE tons of stealerships out there that rip you off by using less than good products....buyer beware. I`ve turned wrenchs in dealerships over 30+ years, trust me, i KNOWWWWW what they`re capable of. Dealerships are called stealerships for a good reason, much like the whitehouse, they`re full of theifs and liers. Now lets say they used bulk oil, is it truely 5w20 so that the MDS will work properly...??? Likely not the correct oil. Get the oil AND the filter changed as soon as possible. I use either valvoline syn power, or penzoil ultra. Both are very good oils for these hemi`s. Dont use mobil 1, just trust me on that issue.
In the future, i would be looking into a different stealership,
the one you`re using right now is sticking it in your you know what.
I am a retard.
I've downgraded to Defcon 4.
The dealer did NOT go hog wild on joy rides. The mileage on my ticket was reflected from when the Chrysler rep created it to order parts. *phew*
So, from 8/21 until yesterday, I drove 1k miles. I'm glad I started off nice on the phone because it was hard not to but boy was I glad when I read the ticket wrong. I did make one suggestion that they actually check the mileage when the trucks go out because my ticket said miles in/miles out were the same. He said he'd talk to their techs.
Now the oil thing, I went ahead and did the oil change again this morning with my regular old Mobil1. Couldn't deal with the hassle of taking it up there; leaving for a fishing trip today and it only takes me ~10 mins to change the oil myself. Left their filter, just drained it and changed it. Drove ~50 miles this morning and the lifters still seemed to be the culprit with my noise issue. No noise.
Alright... what's the story on this??

I'm betting that your noise comes back as soon as the Mobile 1 cycles through the lifters. You would not be the first one to complain of additional noise when using a full synthetic. Would have been a brighter idea to leave the standard 5w20 in there for at least a thousand miles or so to see if the noise stayed away.
I've been using Mobil 1 in our fleet trucks and personal vehicles for a long time and know several mechanics who've been turning wrenches longer than you and neither they nor I have any issues with it. What's your story?
As much oil as the lifters squirt out every cycle, I would think that 50 miles were more than sufficient for the lifters to be on full of mobil1. So, let's see, it wasn't the transmission, the dealer did not put 1000 miles on the truck, the oil was not "masking" the lifter noise, what else? Man don't look a gift horse in the mouth. It seems to me you have been treated fairly and so far your concerns have been addressed.
Another update... noise came back again after the lifter repair. This time Chrysler recommended a new cam shaft.
That repair was just completed but as soon as I got the truck back from the dealer, off it went to the body shop to take care of Mrs. Deer.
I'll leave the dealer's conventional oil in this time for 1k or so before I try to switch back to M1. If conventional oil "saves the day" I'll just switch and be done with it.

Just read the entire thread...interesting. So every once in a while I have a noise that sounds like a sheild vibration. Is that what this noise sounds like? It usually happens when it is at a certain RPM, but can't always reproduce it.
The only other TC problem I had was for engine light coming on for TC RPM mismatch while towing my 16' snowmobile trailer. Took it in and left the ticket open and hasn't happened since. It's been almost a year..man a year already??
