Star Case - Transmission noise - For those that are still looking for this info
Another update... noise came back again after the lifter repair. This time Chrysler recommended a new cam shaft.
That repair was just completed but as soon as I got the truck back from the dealer, off it went to the body shop to take care of Mrs. Deer.
I'll leave the dealer's conventional oil in this time for 1k or so before I try to switch back to M1. If conventional oil "saves the day" I'll just switch and be done with it.

let me know how that MOBIL1 works out for you...
i bet you`ll be switching brands real soon and not use MOBIL1 ever again...
.....at least not in a hemi vehicle anyway.
My 1st choice: Valvoline SynPower (5w20)
My 2nd choice: Penzoil Ultra (5w20)
I would ***** in my oilpan before i would E-V-E-R use M1 again.

Ok, lets get back to the star case transmission post & threads now. We dont need another oil war going on here.
Use what you want, my friends an i will continue NOT to use M1.
As a followup to my earlier post-I went back to Crowne Dodge in Chattanooga to discuss what they were going to do for me. Turns out they would fix problem but they STILL insisted that the updates were NOT covered and I would have to pay for them. I thanked them for their trouble and asked for my keys back as I would be taking the truck to someone else. Took the truck home and it sat for 3 days. Then I went out Sunday-and-everything was working fine again. The MDS worked just as before, no problems whatsoever. I tried flooring it, putting it in tow mode, everything-I just started working again. It's like the problem never even happened. Now I'm hesitant to take it in for the updates since now it is working perfectly. Should I chance it and have Ringgold Dodge install the updates (of which they aren't going to charge me for) or should I not let anybody touch it? Now I'm confused but relived.

You may have possibly have had a pooter that might of had a brainfart and now its ok.
These trucks need time to re-learn, then they usually are just fine... just drive it.
Just some advice... NEVER let the dealer do ANY updates unless you have problems and nothing else will do.
Too many times i`ve seen AND heard that after updating, customer`s are forever complaining that their vehicle is worse.

Figured I'd update as well.
Dealer replaced the cam shaft and that's taken care of the noise. So my travels with this issue took me through torque converter solenoid, new exhaust, new driving tune, new lifters, and finally new cam shaft. Yeesh.
All's good in truckland for this dude. I'm REALLY hoping they run another 0% for 84 months like they did in April because I think want to go hog wild on a new laramie.

Hey Guys,
Hope all is well. And Happy New Years to you guys.
I was looking at the star case that was done to my vehicle.
I think they used wrong torque converter on mine. My truck is a 2011 Ram 1500 5.7 4x4
Yet this is the part they used: R8051146-AB
Yet the picture posted of the star case says this:
RL051146AB - 2011 5.7L DS/DD/DJ/D2 only
RL051241AB - 2011 5.7L 2WD/4WD WD/WK/W2 only
Did they use wrong part because my truck has 4wd????

Some time before I traded my 2010 Ram Big Horn I found that tapping or striking the front of the box produced a noise that sounded an awful lot like the issue mentioned in this thread. I got underneath the vehicle and found that the front of the box has an inner panel (load side) and an outer panel (cab side).
I pushed some foam up into the gap between these two panels to stop the rattle and found the moan/groan issue was reduced by 80% at the point I usually hear it. This brought me to the suspicion that whatever is moaning gets telegraphed through the driveshaft and the loose panels were vibrating sympathetically. Adding to that, a person once rode in the back and said that the noise was "very loud" and could feel it in the box floor.
Fast forward to today. While underneath my 2014 Big Horn, 5.7 Hemi, I noticed a completely new driveshaft configuration. There are two drives shafts with a carrier bearing in between them mounted in a fairly large rubber isolator. I also noticed that this driveshaft does not have a hollow ring to it when tapped on.
The front U-joint is also in a yoke affair with a anti-vibration ring surrounding it. In the middle of the rear section is a rubber cover that looks like it's protecting a slip system.
If I could figure out how to load pictures into this note I'd let you guys see it.

Dusty
