4wd Low Question

Default 4wd Low Question

I am not sure if 4wd low in my 2010 ram is working correctly. When I switch from 2wd directly to 4low, the 4low light just flashes on the dash, and does not engage. When I switch from 2wd to 4lock, let the 4wd engage (4wd light on dash steady), then to 2wd, the 4wd light is on steady and the 4low light still flashes. It is in 4 wheel drive at this point, but Im not sure if it is in 4low. Should the 4low light be steady or flashing? Can I switch directly from 2wd to 4low or do I need to go to 4lock first?

I try to go into 4 before I go into 4 low. Also I try to be stopped before I do engage it. I think the manual says no more than 20km/h but I know that thats a pretty pretty big ratio difference.

Yes the 4 low will blink. If its not engaging you will get a service 4wd light

Neutral before shifting into 4lo..then the light will come on steady

STOPPED and in neutral to get to 4 low. It's VERY low, and can easily overpower your brakes.

If 4 lo is blinking then you are not in 4 lo. I have used it several times and it never blinks.

Here is how it should work. I have highlighted each procedure as there are three different configurations based on the options of your particular vehicle. A manually shifted transfer case, electronically shifted transfer case with 4 position switch, and an electronically shifted transfer case with 5 position switch. See below. It discusses the flashing light.


Shifting Procedure – Manually Shifted Transfer
Case

2H or 4H ⇔ 4L
With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift
the transmission into NEUTRAL. While the vehicle is
coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer
case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in
transfer case NEUTRAL.
NOTE:
• Pausing in transfer case NEUTRAL in vehicles
equipped with an automatic transmission may require
shutting the engine OFF to avoid gear clash while
completing the shift. If difficulty occurs, shift the
transmission into NEUTRAL, hold foot on brake, and
turn the engine OFF. Make shift to the desired mode.
• Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the vehicle
completely stopped, however difficulty may occur due
to the mating clutch teeth not being properly aligned.
Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth
alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred
method is with the vehicle rolling 2 to 3 mph (3 to
5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4L
with the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to
5 km/h).
• Do not attempt to shift into or from 4L while the
transmission is in gear.

Electronically Shifted Transfer Case
(Four-Position Switch) –
If Equipped
This is an electronic shift transfer case and is operated by
the 4WD Control Switch (Transfer Case Switch), which is
located on the instrument panel.

2WD or 4WD LOCK⇔ 4WD LOW
NOTE: When shifting into or out of 4WD LOW some
gear noise may be heard. This noise is normal and is not
detrimental to the vehicle or occupants.
Shifting can be performed with the vehicle rolling 2 to
3 mph (3 to 5 km/h) or completely stopped. You can use
either of the following procedures:
Preferred Procedure
1. With the engine running, slow the vehicle to 2 to
3 mph (3 to 5 km/h).
2. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.
3. While still rolling, rotate the transfer case control
switch to the desired position.
4. After the desired position indicator light is ON (not
flashing), shift the transmission back into gear.
Alternate Procedure

Learn something new everyday...I never use 4 low but I switched to it by accident one time and thought it went into 4 low, but never really payed attention if it actually engaged or not. I managed to get out of the rim deep mud I was in so I know it went in 4...Just thought it blinked, I hereby retract my previous statement!
