I am about to purchase a 2012 Ram 1500 Express Crew 2x4, 5.7, 3.92 ratio, and trailer brake package. The dealer showed me a print out(a bad photo copy) for the towing capacity that showed 10,100 lbs. I thought it odd that they had NO brochures or literature anywhere for the Ram 1500's. Then when I got home to double-check(on Dodge websites), I found where the truck originally listed a max tow of 8500 lbs, then I found another listing it at 9300 lbs.
It's starting to **** me off because it looks like just advertising gimmicks. I am down grading from a Cummins 2500, but still intend to tow, so the actual towing capacity is a VERY important part of my decision.

I guess my real question is does anyone actually tow 8-9000 lbs with their truck and how does it do?
And does anyone have the real towing #'s?

There's a small button labeled "Look Up My Vehicle" and you can put in the specifics of your truck, and it will tell you the max tow rating.

 

Thanks, I've used that link before and a few others with the same claims. But I've used other Official Dodge sites that list it as 8500 lbs. Hell, even the window stickers still list 8500 lbs. Just seems a little suspect. Oh well, I'm buying it regardless, the only reason I didn't bring it home yesterday is because they only had 1 4x4 on the lot, but it wasn't set up the way I wanted. But I do love these trucks!

 

A weight distributing hitch is an absolute must for heavy loads with these trucks. It will make a night and day difference in the way the truck handles with a heavy trailer.

 

8500 is the gvwr i think, not the trailer towing capacity? not sure but i know it is a little confusing as it does change a little with the different gear ratios and tire options, or did in 09 and 10 model years.

it'll pull it good but weight distributing hitch is definatly a must (actually states that required for those weights in book i believe). again, its not a 2500, but it is a truck. i think the biggest problem is the crappy p-rated tires when your trying to actually use it as a truck.

 

8500 is the towing capacity for 3.55 gears. Capacity is 10k if you have 3.92.

 

Because you have the 3.92 gear it increases the tow capacity from 8,500 w/3.55 to 10,000 and the 2wd adds another 200 for a total of 10,200 towing with the class 4 hitch.

My 2011 Hemi Sport 4x4 w/3.92 and 17” SLT wheels w/ “E” rated tires tows a 24’ enclosed 8.5’ wide 102” tall car hauler that weighs 7,500 to 8,000 depending on load without issues. Equalizer hitch is a must. I put a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller into the factory brake opening mount because it’s light years ahead of the factory brake controller offering. It plugs right in with the accessory cable and cost the same as the factory model. I’ve got some pics that I could post if you’d like to see them of the instillation.

 

The tow rating for your truck is 8800 with 3.92,7800 with 3.55 and 6800 with 3.21. Thats 2012 express,4x2,quad-cab-hemi. 20 inch tires.I haven't towed with mine yet.

 

What are you basing those numbers on? They don't match anything I've ever seen listed.

 

Rawhide your posting for tow weight is incorrect. The Hemi Express Crew 4x2 w/3.92 is rated 10,200 on the Ram website ironside listed. Any of the 4x2 Hemi CC w/3.92 are 10.2k except Laramie at 9,800
