Default Name that Dashtop Doodad! RAM 1500

I'm about to install a dash carpet on my 1500 ST and discovered something I'll be covering up that I don't think I should. Anyone know what the following is for, and should I cut the carpet cover to expose it?

There's an hemispherical "bump" about 1/4" in diameter up near the winddshield. Maybe about 3 inches inward from where the dash meets the glass, and almost in line with the pivot point of the passenger windshield wiper.

I have a gray dash, this "bump" is the same gray and my eyesight isn't as good as it was. If there are any markings I can't make them out. It all sort of blends together for me and I never noticed it until I first laid out the carpet.

Yep, they do (optional package add-on). Easy enough to test. Put carpet in place, set lights to auto, then point the truck into the afternoon west Texas sun. If the lights come on, it's the auto-on sensor you suggested. Thanks!

Yup. That's what it is. Since I like my lights on while driving (and it's legal to do so) I think I'll just cover over that puppy so the auto-on sensor thinks its always night time.

The only problem I see is that all your instruments will think its night too. The lights will dim on the radio and stuff.

Not if you turn the noob to the right just before your interior lights come on, then the radio and info center will light up like daytime
