Default Squeaking/Snapping Tailgate ?

My tailgate has started to squeak/make a banging sound when I open and close it but not every time. I have lubed the hinges but it almost seems like it is in the tailgate itself. My dealer could not duplicate the noise but of course it did it when i opened the tailgate when I got home.

I have read about some sort of torsion bar that is supposed to make it easier to open / close the tailgate. Does anybody know if this somehow could be making the noise and if so, is it possible to lube it etc. The noise is just annoying really since I do not think it is damaging the truck that I can see.

Thanks for any help.

You can take the access panel off easily and look inside to see if you can find the source of the sound. With the panel off you have quite a bit of room to look around.

Id bet it's the rods from the handle that open the latches that are banging around.

Thanks for the advice.

I will open up the access panel and take a look. The noise only happens on open/close and seems to be at a certain level but I guess I will see whats in there.

The rods should have a styrofoam ring around then to prevent clattering noise. If its gone, that's the problem.

Also if you held the tailgate handle open when lowering it that could pull them enough to tighten up the slack and stop the noise
