Default Loud Clunking in Dash on Startup

2009 Ram Sport CC, 45,000 mile. This problem just started today. 5 secs after each startup, there is a loud banging coming from the right side of the dash. I imagine that is is a vent door gear or actuator problem. Has anyone had this issue? Help appreciated.

Dr,

There was a recall on many for an actuator issue if that is indeed the problem you are beginning to experience. A copy of the recall is below.

Customer Satisfaction Notification K17
Reprogram HVAC Control Head and Inspect/Replace
Actuators
2009-2010 (DS) Ram Truck (1500 series)
2010 (DJ) Ram Truck (2500 series)
2010 (D2) Ram Truck (3500 series)
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles built through May 22, 2010
(MDH 052220).
The HVAC mode door actuator gears on about 225,000 of the above vehicles may
break and result in the inability to fully control the HVAC functions.
All involved vehicles must have updated HVAC control head software installed
and the mode door actuators must be tested and replaced as required.
NOTE: Some vehicles equipped with Manual Temperature Control (MTC)
will require a control head bootloader flash before performing the control
head software update. See the service procedure for complete details.

Thanks Chris,
I had the K17 recall completed on 2-16-11. I was having no problems at the time. If I now have a problem related, is it covered under warranty because of the recall or only until 36M/36K?

I had it done 2x, no charge either time. I have the manual controls. The second was well after the 36k warranty. First time I had no problems, it was just done when I was in for inspection or something and they just did the 'recall'. Second time, it was the vent/defrost/floor actuator knocking behind the dash, they had to remove the console to pull the bezel off to service it. I only have the lifetime powertrain. Work order said 'reapply K17 recall'.

If the problem turns out to be the recalled part it will be covered again under the recall. Doesn't matter if your out of 3/36 at this point.

Well, then I got screwed! I also had the recall done and then after the 3 years/36k miles was over, the thumping started. The dealer charged me to fix it. I have an '09 Ram with the lifetime. How do I handle this, I should get a refund for my costs. BTW, I paid the $100 deductible on the extended warranty. Do I have recourse?

Email a copy of the repair order and proof of payment and I will look into it for you. Was that the only repair done at that time? If so and it was part of the recall you can get a refund. If it wasn't the same repair as the recall or if you had other repairs done and they charged you $100 deductible you would not get a refund. Either way if you want me to look into it send a copy to DodgeCares@gmail.com

The first time they work order was for reprogramming the controls, and since it wasn't making noises, they did not replace the actuator. The second time the actuator was replaced. So basically, it wasn't considered part of the recall, thus not covered by the recall. What upsets me most, is that KddsRam had the exact same thing happen to him and it didn't cost him any money. This is just inconsistent service. Also Dr Bill has the same situation as me and he'll probably get it done under the recall. No other work was done.
