Dee Zee spray on rock guard?
I was installing my mud flaps and tube steps when i see rock chips on the bottom of the rockers, some down to the metal ? This was through the dealer applied Dee Zee rock guard, a black sprayed on material. I took my finger nail and scratched lightly at it ,and it came right off!!! There is no way this stuff is going to hold up . Back to the dealer again! I was okay with them returning 200 of 400 on the incomplete undercoat. But this is ridiculous!! I did a search for Dee zee rock guard spray and got nothing anyone even hear of it ? I have like 1400 miles on it. 99.9 percent on blacktop.
Like Rob said, 3M clear auto body tape, best thing since sliced bread. You can get a roll of it at most any auto supply place. I have it on my truck. I even installed the clear tape on to the fender areas before installing my mud slappers so it wouldnt rub the paint off. Been on the truck over 3 years, still looks like the day i put it on. Being that its clear, you cant really see it unless you look hard at it.
Depends where on the truck you want to apply the protection, but I'd strongly recommend having a professional install it. However, don't go to a dealership or auto body place and ask them to do it... find the installers who they are contracting with and work directly with them. It will cost WAY less.
I have ScotchCal all over the front of my RAM and other places. Most of the front-facing surfaces of my grill are covered, as well as the front bumper cover (remember, I have a Sport). Also have it under the door pulls, on the door sills, and under where the mud flaps mount, to protect against them running into the paint.
Here's a picture where you can (barely) see the line of the edge of the product. Look about 10" up from the front edge of the hood.

And a view of the grill coverage:
