Driving in the city and hwy mix best my truck (2012 ram rcsb 2wd hemi) has ever gotten has been close to 300 a tank.

286 and then I figured I got 13.5 to a gal. Cause I put 21 gal. In it when I filled up. Truck usually averages 200-250 a tank. Bone stock truck.

Now I run 87 octane could this have a big effect on gas mileage?

Here is a thread you may want to browse through. On the surface it does appear you might a little low.

If this is your city driving, good luck. Actually I average about 13.5 to 14.5 local city driving. I can also get an average of 20 mpg doing 70 mph on the freeway with the right conditions.

You really have to squeeze those miles out as city driving is all relative, there is the wide open Montana city driving and then there is the California (and many other areas) city driving.

Slow starts and coasting as much as possible when you see the light turn red in front of you. The biggest use of gas is getting the truck to roll from a dead stop, any momentum you can maintain is your friend. Keep a light foot on the gas pedal and stay off the brakes as much as possible or slow gradual stops in the hops of keeping any momentum of the truck going.

Yep. What he said. I have had a couple tanks where I was under 14, and others over 17. Sometimes you just get crappy gas.
