when to plug in
-40 celcius is the same as -40 fahrenheit, my 2010 will start without being plugged in, you need a battery in good condition and synthetic oil helps.
Plugging in will greatly ease starting and warm up times but it is not nessasary.

What's the point of having a plug in if you won't use it, at temps that cold when plugged in at least the coolant temp is already at or near 100 f, is there an award for whoevers truck starts at the coldest temp without being plugged in.
No award for me, there's just no plug in available where I park, and -30 isn't uncommon where I live, pretty normal to expect your vehicle to start in those temps if you plan on living here.
I'll plug in if I can, in most situations.

Its just not very common for there to be a plug in on non diesel trucks. -16F this morning and it starts up just fine.
I know they make pad style heaters or dipstick ones that you can add to the oil pan. If i lived where it was that cold i would even with a gas engine, anything would help if you had a place to plug it in. Set it up on a timer and you engine would thank you
look up kats heaters at amazon..lots of cool stuff

I'm trying to imagine tens of thousands of people at work hauling around extension cords to plug in their vehicles every time it gets below 0 (Nov - April)
