Default Source for spare key/remotes?

My dealer is quoting almost $300 for a spare key/remote for my 11' with the remote start button. But i have found at least one source that has these keys for $114 shipped and they claim you can program them yourself so long as you have two working keys already.

Has anybody done this?

More like $89, but it'll cost you $60 or so at the dealer to get it programmed + whatever your local home depot/ hardware store charges to cut the emergency key.

$30.00 on Ebay but you still need to go to the dealer for programming. I got two extra when I had the remote start added, my original non-remote start ones!

I was unable to find a 4 button (Remote start version) Fobik for less then $114.00. I am still curious as to whether you can truly program the Fob's yourself if you have two that work already?

That aside, i would like a spare key to use for my tailgate lock without having to constantly remove the emergency key from the Fob. Is the key size and shape something that can be found in a normal style key? Anybody done that before?

Spend the $100 and add the power tailgate lock

The power-lock tailgate is nice. Definitely on my list. Just curious, did you not get one regular non-fobik key with the truck? Can't start it but you can use it for doors and tailgate. If not, you can easily get a regular key made with the same pattern as your emergency key. Should be cheap, <$10, as there is no need for a transponder key. My dad has one as he always must hide a door key in the truck somewhere.

FWIW, mine came with 2 regular keys and the 2 fobs. I suspect that a lot of used trucks don't come with them since mine are sitting in a drawer and I forgot they were there until you asked if his came with one.

My truck came with two fobs and no other keys.

As for the power tailgate lock, i had an aftermarket model on my 06' that was nice. It did however fail this past winter and of course it happened when i needed to unload 900 pounds of steel. I had scramble to find a Torx driver and take all the screws out of the access panel on the tailgate. Not fun.

But honestly i am not a fan of the wiring involved including the long cable run under the truck for the sole purpose of eliminating having to use a key the few times a week sometimes only a few times a month i open my cap/tailgate.
