Considering a 2wd Ram 1500 or 2wd Titan - questions?
agree...titans have the worst mileage. That's understandable considering they are mostly unchanged since they came out back in 2004. That motor they have though is damn nice though. Lots a power and torque. Nothing wrong with the Ram either. I'd say, whatever one is in the best condition overall. My choice would be the crew cab for the extra room but that might not mean anything to you.
I have owned both a 2008 Titan crew cab and now a 2011 5.7 Hemi Ram Laramie crew cab. The titan gas mileage is OK as long as it is stock I was getting 15-18 mpg mixed driving. I get 17-20 mpg in the Ram. After I started adding aftermarket wheels, tires and some motor parts the gas mileage in the titan dropped to about 13mpg. Titan dependabilty is awesome, I left the dealer the day I bought it and never returned for the 4 years I owned it, No recalls during my ownership and I do my own maintenance. The Ram dependability is hit or miss. I have had about 3 recalls done to it. The fact you have to change the plugs at 36,000 miles is stupid. Other than that little problems here and there. As far as power both feel about the same. As far as comfort and interior the RAM blows the titan out of water. The Ram is sexier than the titan. I feel Dodge's service departments Suck and are not helpful, compared to others I have dealt with like BMW and Mercedes. Like I said I couldn't comment on the Nissan service department I never had to go there.
I had a 2003 Dodge Dakota with the 4.7 motor and it went 155,000 miles without anything being touched except spark plugs, air & oil filters. Engine was extremely smooth and exceptionally quiet right up until the time I traded it. Lot's of torque for a small motor. In the Dakota I averaged 18-19 in daily driving, but quite honestly they generally got no better than the Hemi in the Ram platform.
As far as Titans go, I have two acquaintances who bought them around the same time I bought my 2010 Ram. They thought because it was built by a Japanese company it would be oodles better than my "crummy Dodge," as they'd like to say. Within about six months they became noticeably very quiet (I suggest checking Consumers' Reports). My 2010 Ram proved to be almost, completely problem free, even after 104,000 miles.
Now anything used can be a problem. Rams are not perfect, either. But I would say if you were gambling with my money I'd go the Ram.
Best regards,
Dusty
