need a new engine!!!!
I have a 2012 ram 1500 with 225000km (not sure of the miles???) and it was diagnosed with a worn out cam on cylinder 3....basically they told me i need a new engine?!?!?
Has anyone had this happen or heard of it happening before? Is this a 1 in million kinda deal??? I'm at a loss right now!!

If it's just a worn out cam, no - you don't need a new engine; you could fix it yourself for a few hundred bucks.
However, if you're going to have someone else do all the work, it will probably won't be much more expensive to have them put in a USED motor than put a new cam in yours. And the used one will (hopefully) have less miles on it, and better overall health. Especially considering that you already have a worn cam at 225kK (140k miles).

So you have around 140,000 miles - seems odd that it would wear out that quick. Are you the original owner? Been changing the oil and using the right kind of oil? Have a tuner or any other aftermarket junk on it?
there have been some reports of cam lobes wearing early due to metallurgical issues. You have a tough call here, at 140k miles, a new cam could fix your current problem and a new one pop up on the other side. The rings are probably a little worn also. Once you open it up, then you need new lifters, new chain, new everything related to the cam so it adds up.
How much for a new long block? vs a new cam? If you plan on keeping the truck and at the rate you pile up miles, a new long block may be the way to go.
