Default Oil Life/Oil Change Indicator 4th Gen Ram Premium Cluster

Some time back I ran across a Ram 1500 Diesel owner who stated that the Oil Life Monitor/Change Oil Indicator on the Premium Cluster was not a "true" oil life system, but simply triggered a Change Oil message at 10,000 miles since last reset.

I suppose this could be true on the 3.0 diesel, but it is not true on my 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi.

Today I got a Change Oil Soon message at 9030 miles (that's 9030 miles since my last oil change reset) and a 5% oil life displayed. Obviously 5 percent of 10,000 miles is 500 miles, so in effect it was telling me that the oil should be changed at 9530 miles.

My last Oil Change Soon message came on at 8755 miles. Although I did not record the oil life percentage figure, it is obvious that the Oil Life monitoring system is not just counting miles.

As a note, when the Oil Life percentage is displayed, it appears that when 6% and above is remaining, the number is displayed in white. When it switches to 5%, the number is red.

Best regards,
Dusty

I would not trust or go that many miles between oil changes because a light comes on. I am still old school, and change mine every 3000 miles, because fresh oil is cheap insurance for a long life engine.
