Default Gear selector wont downshift when coasting

2013 ram 3500 SRW 6.7 68rfe 52K miles stock
In normal mode(not tow/haul) in 5th gear (usually use that for short trips) and coasting, slowing down thru a curve or corner or stoplight turning green hitting the manual shift button to downshift does not shift down. Come out of curve or corner in 5th and lugging until I depress the accelerator a lot and it will then shift down. It does this when my foot is off the accelerator but if accelerator is depressed a little while manually shifting down, it does downshift. Problem is intermittent occurs 30% of time.

It really sounds like you are making the transmission do unnecessary work. My advise is to put it and leave in 5 for non hwy driving and leave it there. Let the transmission do it's thing. For hwy driving leave it in D and for towing also leave in D, hit the tow/haul switch and let the transmission do it's thing. The computer will at times, depending on RPM and speed, will shift for you or prevent you from shifting. I don't know if your transmission is like a ZF BMW that will allow you to shift manually. And even with this feature i would not manually shift cause if the computer does not over ride you and you keep it in certain gear under high RPMs something can get tweaked up. On my second Gen RAM i have always turned off the over drive/OD for non hwy driving. I hate the fact that the OD engages during city driving and been doing this since truck was new. On my fourth Gen i always leave it in D and use tow-haul as needed. I don't even put it in 5 (similar to turning off OD) for non hwy driving. I figure the less i mess with it the longer it will last.

Hello Psylopsida,

Intermittent concerns can be difficult to pinpoint. If it occurs again and you head into the dealer, let us know. We'd be glad to escalate your inquiry to a Case Specialist for further handling.
