Default shifter noise

2018 ram. when you turn the shifter from park to rev it makes a small knocking noise. it just started doing this. also at the same time it makes a buzzing under the dash when you put the brake on to shift out of park. dealer said that this is normal and every truck does it. it has not done it for 20,000 mi and just started.

Mine doesnt buzz, but it does occasionally click when selecting gears. You experiencing cooler local temps for the first time?

Well, the dealership is correct in that they will all have a shift interlock that releases when the key is On and the brake pedal is pressed, but it sounds like your might be noisier than it used to be, or everything else is strangely more quiet and so you're better able to hear the interlock. It would typically be described more as a click than a buzz though.

It does seem suspicious that both noises seem to have appeared at the same time, and since you describe the interlock as a buzz I wonder if the interlock is sticking or failing and the knock you describe is due to the interlock not fully retracting. The knock is you forcing the pin the rest of the way as you attempt to shift out of Park.

It does, although I'm less familiar with the physical mechanism that serves as the interlock. I have the dial shifter on my 2014 Ram and can hear/feel it disengage when applying the brake pedal. I have also confirmed that I'm not able to shift it out of park using reasonable force if the brake pedal has not been depressed or the ignition is not in the Run position.
