Key Fob Only works when disassembled
Hello All,
First post here on these forums. I have a 2015 RAM 2500 6.7l and I am having key fob issues...but they are quite strange.
First, a little history...
The fobs started acting like the range was decreasing (typically a battery issue) about 6 months ago. Remote started to almost never work and everything else I had to get very close (10'-15' away) for it to work.
I also noticed that when I would attempt to use the door handle lock button, the truck would actually unlock instead about 60% of the time.
Changed the batteries and things got better but not back to normal.
Fast forward to this week...got in the truck in the morning and started it (could not remote start) and forgot that my sunglasses were in my backpack in the back seat. Got out the truck and went to the back drivers side door to access my backpack.
Got back in the truck...keyfob not detected. Waited a few minutes, no change. Placed the fob next to the start button...no change. Unlocked and locked the truck via the key fob and that worked but the truck still said "key fob not detected".
Killed the engine, unlocked the truck again and restarted the truck...strange right....gets better.
Bring the truck into the dealership to troubleshoot and they find the batteries under 3v (less than 6 months old). Ok...great. Changed the batteries...no change. Guy calls me back and says that the unlock, lock and panic work fine but the remote start will only work if the key fob is disassembled....DUMBEST thing I ever heard and thought 100% that the stealership was trying to get me to fork over $250 for a new key. Refused and went pick the truck up.
Got it home tonight and sure enough...take the key fob apart and hold the circuit board in my hand...remote start works like a champ. Put it back together and notta...nothing.
Has anyone ran into this before and fixed it????

My guesses would be that the button pad has left some conductive material on the contact part of the circuit board. When the fob is assembled, the case either applies enough pressure to short out one of the buttons (draining the battery and not allowing other features to work) or twists things enough to cause a similar effect. You might be lucky enough that buying a replacement case, without the board, will get your fob working correctly again for a lot less money and hassle than a completely new fob would require.
It could also be an issue with a solder joint internally, but then I wouldn't expect the battery to drain excessively quickly or for some of the features to work when others do not, unless twisting from pressing certain areas allows the solder open to close. That still wouldn't explain the rapid discharge, unless you happened to just install an already weak battery.

I have have the exact issue that you had with with your Ram key fob. I'm running around with my circuit board in a small pill container currently in order to use my remote.... You explained the situation to a "T" Did you ever come up with a fix for this issue? your help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Greg

Do you have a second key fob for your truck? If so, confirm remote start works fine with it, then try opening it up and putting your suspect board in the other fob case. If it now works, then the issue is likely that, for some reason, the keypad is not able to fully depress the buttons on the board. You could further confirm that by placing the board from the good fob into the suspect case and confirm remote start doesn't work. If you get that lucky, you should be able to buy a new case/housing and put your circuit board into it.
As far as the battery dying after only 6 months, it could be an old or poor quality battery (I've fallen victim to this) or it may be that the remote start button is making contact when it shouldn't and draining the battery. You may not get any indication that this is happening if the right sequence of presses with correct timing are not made to initiate a remote start.

I would make sure the RF hub isnt going out. I had some of the same issues and some different ones but battery swap never helped mine. I didnt try taking the chip to use it so i cant say on that. RF hubs have had issues in 4th gens unless they fixed the issue in 2015
I had key fob problems on my 1500. It was really weird. Sometimes it worked and other times not. Replaced fobs and tried lots of things. Finally took it to a dealer and he found a mouse had got in and chewed a wire under my rear passenger seat that was related to the ignition and Fob controls. Finally fixed.
Check your wire harness related to this and I think that is where your issue stems from.
Cheers
