Default Led lights

You
2012 ram 3500 limited. I replaced the 3rd brake light and 2 cargo lights with 921 LEDs. Brake light works fine and only lights when the brake is depressed. The two cargo lights are dimly lit even when the cargo lights are off. Essentially I drive around with dimly lit cargo lights. When cargo light is depressed, cargo light look bright and normal. Why are they dimly lit when they should be off.

LEDs are VERY efficient compared with normal incandescent bulbs. It takes very little current through an LED to cause it to emit light. There's something causing a small amount of current to flow through the circuit, such as a "bulb out" detection circuit. I'd be a bit surprised if the cargo lights are monitored for "bulb out" but possibly.

You might be able to mask the issue by installing a properly sized series resistor with the LEDs or getting CANBUS compatible LEDs. Just be aware that a series resistor will result in a slight dimming of the LEDs when switched on, but since they are so efficient, the slight dimming when On may not be perceptible.

Rod,

Thanks for the reply. That checks with everything I’ve read online. Perhaps I will just go back to the incandescent bulbs for the cargo lights. I don’t use them often so it’s not a big deal.
