Default Electric Fans

My fan clutch is bitting the bullet and would rather go with electric fan(s), has anyone done this? How do you keep the water pump pulley on once you remove the fan? Also, how did you attatch it to the rad? I had to cut my shoud with I installed a two inch body lift anyway so that will get tossed.

I want to use the temp control with relays, not just cobble something together. Any ideas?

I have done it. I live in the desert of NM the temps easly gets over 100. You dont have to do what I did but if you live where it gets hot and you tow and you would like to have the ac on while towing, it would be a good Idea. You can buy ele. fans at autozone or pepboys or online at summitracing.com or jegs.com. I have 5 fans. 2 large behind the raid. 2 small in front of the ac condencer. 1 off to the side for the tranny and engine oil coolers. I have make custum brackets for all of them. I have made a fan shroud to help it out. Do not use the plastic ties that go through the raid. fins. I have done it at first. It tore lots of holes in it. It was beyond repair. I had to buy a new raid. make brackets that keep it from tuching the raid. but close to it. For the front ones I had to cut my bumper on the top and the grill on the inside just to clear theend of the motor. I also cut the nut off of the belt driven fan. I put the nut back on to hold the pully on. I put1 relay per fan. I put a thermo switch on the intake man. neer the thermost is. I put the thermo switch to operate the 2 large fans all the time. I put the other 3 on a switch in the cab. When it gets hot or I know I will need the higher cooling I flip the switch on. I put each fan its own power line a thick powercord. I love it. It realy does free up horsepower. I have a 140 amp altenator to up the fans. I dont know if a stock alt. can handle the power. I have towed a 5,000lb trailer up a steep moutian when it is 105 outside with the AC on and the engine temp. never going above 180. It rocks. Good luck.

The brackets are hard to see but 1in wide 1/4 long strips of metal, run across the radiator where the fans bolt to.

Update: I don't have the 5th fan for the oil cooler due to space.

Here are a few pics of a fan shroud I made for my friends 04 Jeep Wrangler, very simple to make use 1/8in sheet metal.

Crazy, thanks for the info. I checked with summit and I think I will go with a kit that has everything and pulls about 2500 cfm. My main concern was the nut on the existing clutch and how I can get it off but looking at it again it doesn't seem to be a problem.

And I have experience with those cheap "throught the radiator" ties. I built a '79 TA (2 actually) will a 455 and the grill area is a little on the small size to cool that beast. So I went with a pusher to get a little more air in there and it toasted the radiator in short time. Brackets it will be to mount the fan.

I've also got a set of fans from an OEM chrysler car which I modified. They work great and I've had no issues with them cooling at all. I'm going to be selling the whole set up for $100 if your interested? I'm selling the truck and didn't want to sell it "modified" so I'm putting it back to stock. Let me know I'll get some pics up today if I can.

how do you get the pulley to stay still for the nut to loosen? I saw a post on an 01 with a 5.2L that said put something through one of the 4 holes at the 12 oclock position to hold it from turning. I tried that but it seems that there's nothing back there that my awl could stick into after it went through the hole in the pulley. I just put everything back togather lastnight so I could drive to work this morning!

I use the belt to hold it. I use a wrench on the tensioner to tighten it. Also I used penitrating oil. Try to apply it severl times over a cuple of hours. I belive the nut turns opposite way. I have tookin it up before but when I desited to go to eletric fans I just cut off the fan. See above pic.

Yeah I just don't wanna cut up my truck. It was my grandpa's before he died. I think he'd be happy about me resurrecting it! I put a 3 panel tonneau cover on it and raised my mpg to 19.3 so I wanna put this electric fan from autozone and get a couple more!

So I can hold the pulley still with the belt tensioner and turn it to the right (towards the drivers side fender) to loosen the can clutch nut huh?

Does the fan clutch nut hold the pulley on or is the pulley pressed on?

The nut holds on the pully so you will have to cut off the nut sometime but its not that easy to get the saw in there. I used a sawsaw with a 1.5 foot metal blade. I cut it off when everything in the truck.

just a note also if you want to solve the look of a sawed off bolt go grab an oe replacement water pump from any parts house with the "pressed on" pully. This will eliminate the need for the fan nut to hold the pully and even comes with a nice black cap over the threads! better to find out that option when you NEED a water pump though.

man I installed the fan after talking to a technician at a dodge dealership. I work at a chevy deaelership in Savannah Ga and the 2 of us went through the tech manual for the 3.9L and you DO NOT have to cut anything!!! The fan clutch nut does NOT hold the water pump pulleyon. It's been almost a month since I've installed my electric fan assembly and nothing has budged. I did not replace the nut with another one and I did not cut up my truck to do the mod. Also...the fan clutch nut is not reversed threads. I'm glad I checked with a professional before trusting the advice of someone who's hacking their truck up!
