Eh, they'll perform better if you put them in a better box. 3 cubic feet NET ported @32hz with about 40 square inches of port.

NG
Where did you get the 3 ft3 from? Do you have the spec sheet on these?

Just make sure you seal it good. I had a slit about 1/4 that wasnt sealed. The leak was so small that it would hiss like heck. I could hear it over the bass, with the rear cover on and through the rest of the music. On the first box I used rubberized car undercoating to seal the box. It also acted like a sound deadener. Brung the sound of the alpines nice and tight.

What the sealer does is prevent any air from leaking from the box. Most built boxes are made of glue/nails. Even the best setup can still have miniature airholes and leak air.

The sealer just helps prevent that by keeping everything within the box and only allowing it out thru the subs.

With the wood/nails in the box...you have to understand that sound is going to vibrate against these....so you can hear the box moving and expanding with the force of the subs. You can use this material to help prevent it by keeping it properly sealed.

Bottom line here is with the properly sealed box, you will hear a much different sound then you would if you just slapped it together with nails and glue. That's why fiberglass has become so popular.

i guess since I'm now a "safe driver" according to my insurance, ill cash that refund check they sent me and buy some rubber stuff. i hope 1/2 inch board is thick enough.

2 more questions: does it really need to be carpeted? and 2 where would i buy the wire pass through thing for the box. like the thing teh links teh wires from teh outside to teh inside.

Carpeting is 99.9% cosmetics. The .1% is that it helps insulate against rattles when the box is placed on bare metal or next to plastic panels like mine is.

Here is the speaker terminal that I used for mine. It's $5 per piece. When I had the 2 Alpine 10's, I wired them in parallel and only needed one.

Radio Shack Speaker terminal
