the secret Ram infinity sound system???
Hey everyone, dodge truck newbie here....bought my '99 ram 1500 a couple of months ago. I just installed a new pioneer deh 2700 head unit so I could play my cd-r's and found something interesting.....the mopar head unit that was in the truck did not say infinity on it and the system didn't sound like it was amped or had decent speakers. When I installed my pioneer deck I couldn't get any sound out of it so I called Crutchfield up and the tech support guys says it sounds like I have the infinity system....he tells me to hook up the blue amp control wire from the deck to the blue wire in the harness I bought from them and see if I get anything. Now not only do I have sound, but it sounds incredible! Loud, clear, little to no distortion, and great definition and separation. I'm extremely happy with how things turned out....
But it's bugging me....do I really have an infinity system? Did that system come with actual infinity speakers? The other thing that was goofy was I couldn't find the ground harness when I installed it, that was my first call to crutchfield....he told me on some trucks it was a black wire with a green stripe....oh, you mean the one that wasn't hooked up to my old deck? I'm beginning to think that a previous owner swapped the head unit at some point, but how would a regular head unit work if the truck has the infinity system? Like I said....I really don't have a problem, just trying to understand......

for the 99 the infinity system(amps and speakers) are made by infinity. I have no idea who made the HU. From what I just asked a long timer here, that we didn't start making the HU until 2002 or 2003.

Yep, no markings on any of the grilles or anything. It has tweeters in the windshield pillars, but on some cars that doesn't necessarily mean it's the factory premium stereo. The whole thing is just bizzarre, logic tells me that the mopar head unit that was in my truck shouldn't have worked but it was working.....oh well, the stereo sounds great so I've got no complaints, it will be one of those unsolved mysteries....like bigfoot or nessie :-)
