Default Sub/Amp power

The specs on my sub say - 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils, power range: 50-300 watts RMS (150 watts per coil), peak power handling: 900 watts

The specs on my amp says - 400 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms, 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms

I was told by Crutchfield tech support that I shouldnt run the amp at 2 ohm, too much power. My problem is it seems like I should be getting more bass out of it. I used to run two 12in subs, so maybe I'm used to that. Just seems to me like it should hit harder than it does.

The other possibility may be the box. It the QLogic box that fits under the driver side rear seat. Its a sealed box with .65 cuft. The sub says .65 to 1.5 cubic ft. Would it be better to add some of that "filling" they sent with the box? Or am I just maxed out on what my 10" can handle??

Wire the voice coils in PARALLEL. Don't worry about pushing too much power. First off, that rating of 800 watts RMS x1 @ 2 ohms is in a perfect world. If your alternator puts out a consistent 14.4 volts, your speakers still wouldn't be getting 800 watts RMS. A lot of power is wasted as heat.

Power doesn't kill speakers, distortion does. If you were giving the speaker 2000 watts TRUE rms, then I'd be concerened. You're fine with what you have now. Hook them up in parallel, and you'll be fine. I use a single 10 inch Audiobahn ALUM-Q 10. You would think there are a dozen 12's in the truck. Know the limits of your voice coils. For example, it's range may be 50-500 hz. 40hz would damage the speaker. 1000hz would fry it in a matter of seconds. I don't know what adjustments your amp has. I have gain, freq, and EQ. You'd be quite surprised what a single 10 will do. If your amp is a two channel, you can even hook the voice coils up seperately. If you want that PUNCH though, stay with a parallel hook up.

Good luck.

So wiring them parrell will make it hit harder than using both channels!?

What amp is this? Assuming the amp is stable at 2-ohms mono, run it as such. That will give you the maximum amount of power to work with. Wire the sub in parallel to present a 2-ohm load to the amp.

I was told by Crutchfield tech support that I shouldnt run the amp at 2 ohm, too much power. My problem is it seems like I should be getting more bass out of it. I used to run two 12in subs, so maybe I'm used to that. Just seems to me like it should hit harder than it does.
Just be gentle on the gain setting, you do run the risk of overdriving the sub and causing failure. Kinda up for grabs if the sub fails thermally or mechanically first, depends on the sub. Just don't try to get too much output out the single sub.

You can try some polyfill, but you are only going to get so much output of a small sub in a small box under your seat.

Best bang for your buck is the Visonik bandpass enclosure from Millionbuy.com comes with matched subs and with a Blitz amp, it'll bump like no other.
