Default DaimlerChrysler Donates $52,500 to Detroit-area Marine Corps Toys for Tots!

Warren, Mich., Dec 17, 2004 - Seven Detroit-area DaimlerChrysler manufacturing and logistics facilities donated $52,500 and hundreds of children's gifts to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in a combined event designed to bring holiday cheer to disadvantaged Michigan families.

At a Dec. 17 ceremony inside the DaimlerChrysler Warren Truck Assembly Plant, Erwin Raphael, Plant Manager - Jefferson North Assembly Plant, presented the proceeds to Staff Sergeant Leon Beldin, Marine Wing Support Group 47, Support Squadron 471, Detachment Bravo, based at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mt. Clemens, Mich., on behalf of the 18,000 employees working at the seven sites.

Marine Corps personnel brought two seven-ton trucks to carry away the toys collected by DaimlerChrysler employees from Warren Truck, Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, Jefferson North Assembly Plant, Sterling Stamping, Warren Stamping, Detroit Axle and DC Transport.

United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 140 also participated in the toy drive. Local 140 President Jim Betty presented $3,000 worth of toys to the Marines.

The $52,500 was raised through the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund's "Good Neighbor, Good Citizen" contributions from all seven of the plants. The money is part of $70,500 raised by DaimlerChrysler Fund for Toys for Tots this year, and eclipses the Fund's 2003 donation of $42,500.

The “Good Neighbor, Good Citizen” initiative was founded to improve the quality of life by supporting organizations engaged in education, arts and humanities, public policy, human services and civic and community involvement.

"We are glad we had this opportunity to do something for Detroit-area children and their families. We hope that every single toy will bring a smile," said Jefferson North's Erwin Raphael. "This DaimlerChrysler 'Good Neighbor, Good Citizen' holiday program has generated a lot of employee enthusiasm throughout this plant and many others."

Based in Quantico, Va., the Marine Corps Toys for Tots was founded in 1947 by Bill Henricks, a Marine Reserve major and public relations executive. One year later it was formally adopted by the Marine Corps and expanded nationwide as the Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program.

During the past year, 15 million toys had been collected in 456 Toys for Tots campaigns, benefiting 6.5 million needy children. Annual dollars raised have grown from less than $500,000 to $42 million.

DaimlerChrysler first became involved with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots in 1997. Since 1999 the program has expanded to include local toy drives at DaimlerChrysler plants and offices across the U.S.

The DaimlerChrysler Fund was established in 1953 and is the primary source of charitable grants made by DaimlerChrysler Corp. Its mission is to make positive, lasting differences in the communities in which DaimlerChrysler conducts business. In 2003 the DaimlerChrysler Fund donated more than $22 million to charities nationwide.
