Revenge in the Valley -- WWE return to Dodge Arena

Dodge Arena had to release more tickets for sale to the World Wrestling Entertainment show tonight.

That’s because they sold all of the initial tickets the day they went on sale.

“We went on sale with WWE on Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m.,” said Yajaira Flores, marketing director at Dodge Arena in Hidalgo. “We had people here at 8 a.m. on Friday. The shows that have WWE Raw and Smackdown are their most popular shows. They have incredible ratings.”

Flores said Dodge Arena advertised tonight’s performance while WWE shows were being televised on Time Warner Cable and the Fox Broadcasting Company.

WWE RAW will present its Wrestlemania Revenge at 7:30 p.m., during which they will feature both male and female wrestlers. These will include Carlito, who will challenge “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters, and Viscera, who will go against Shelton Benjamin. The show will become even more dynamic when teams of wrestlers appear in the ring, including Goldust and Snitsky taking on Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.

A women’s championship title match will feature Trish Stratus taking on Mickie James, with Candice Michelle serving as guest announcer.

The World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. Web site, www.wwe.com, says James and Stratus duked it out at a show April 30 called Backlash.

“Midway through the contest,” according to the Web site, “Trish badly dislocated her shoulder, leaving her unable to properly defend herself against whatever punishment Mickie wanted to deliver. When Trish got back in the ring, Mickie went psycho again. She began to choke a helpless Trish, leaving the referee no choice but to disqualify the crazed Diva, ending Trish’s chance to reclaim the championship.”

John Cena will also compete against Triple H and Edge (with Lita). Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will serve as special referee. Cena fought here in October before an excited crowd of loyal fans. Young girls stood anxiously in line with homemade signs professing their love for the wrestler.

Others, like 10-year-old Alex Garcia of Brownsville, were anxious to see Cena’s wrestling moves.

“I love the action about him and the chains he wears,” said the fifth-grader who wore a luchador mask and full spandex attire.

Cena has continued to make news since that October performance; the WWE Web site says he’s considered one of the most controversial champions in WWE history.

“John Cena, Triple H and Edge battled in arguably the most hellacious Triple Threat Match in WWE history,” the site says of a recent fight. “Edge tried to use his intelligence in the early goings by standing by on the outside, allowing Triple H and Cena to battle it out. Eventually, The Champ and The Game stopped attacking each other and double teamed the Rated R Superstar, but the partnership would not last long.”

Performing the kinds of moves for which WWE wrestlers are famous requires a great deal of training.

“Some of it’s trial and error,” said wrestler Maven Huffman at a WWE performance here in late 2004. The wrestlers delighted their audience with an array of mid-air flips and precision falls that would have inflicted serious injuries on anyone without years of training.

“You can’t be in this business without getting hurt,” Huffman said. “It’s one of those things; you develop a feel for it.”
