Default Engine problem

Hello!

Im new to this forum and to the mopar world.
Today i was going to buy my first American car.
Everything was ok. But then when i was driving home. About 2 miles the engine dies. And it dident start.
It got fule and spark. We only checked the coil not the spark plug wires.
What can be wrong. Its a 1974 Challenger 318cid automatic.

Any info on how many they build this year i allso need.

Does it backfire (pop) back thru the carb? if yes, it's probably going to be the timing chain, if not, check or replace the ballast resistor, it might be weak.

First check for spark at the plugs and work your way back up if there isn't any spark at the plugs. Unfortunately in the 70's they started using plastic for theteeth on the timing gears for noise reduction and over time they tend to become brittle and break apart and end up in the oil pan. I'm not certain as to wether or not the '74 318's had those type gears or not. If it's getting both fuel and spark to the cylinders then it's almost certainly the timing.
