I read about it in Hot rod mag,10 years ago it was a old issue from 1966 it had 5 or 6 pic's in it.talk about him being ban from Nascar that year,so he went drag raceing.and something about a 12 or 13 year old boy who ran out in front of him during a race, the boy was killed, and Petty Quit Drag raceing because the strips weren't safe.when i get time i will go to my dad's and see if i can find the issue, then scan it load it up,maybe with some pic's of my cars.

I've read about that before, so maybe I have seen that car and just don't remember. Pics of your car would be great as well.[sm=smiley20.gif]

Wow, never heard that one before about the "King". Why did they ban Petty from NASCAR in the first place?? Man, the things I learn here....[sm=smiley29.gif]

NASCAR is gm based, chevy's lose nascar is not happy back in the 60's chevy had a larger market and the fraze( What wins on Sunday SELLS on Monday ) was very true. Dodge and Plymouth were the last to back street racers in Detroit and some of the other big citys they would find the best racers and put them in stock looking cars and send them out Fri and Sat night to beat every hot car they could find.they kept a crew to fine tune the car at the shop so the guys could come and go as they needed to ,even paid for the gas.I know one of the ford racers from Detroit.sorry back to nascar petty and other Mopar drivers had to put restictor plates on the 426 hemi to cut down the air flow so the 427,428,429 ford and the 427 chevy could keep up.the wing on the superbird caused a lot of fuss too.and theres so many more things i am forgetting now.i do remember that in 71,72 Dale Earnheart was a driver in one of pettys chargers.

Just went to www.RichadPetty.com picked history and put in Richard Petty Drag raceing 1965. he drag race in 1965 and the litte boy was killed when pettys supention broke so i was wrong about the year and where the 8yr old boy was hit.(SORRY) but Mopar boycotted nascar in 1965 because nascar ban the big Mopar motor.now i'm going back to petty.com and look for some pic's.

Yeah, I remember the fuss about the Superbird and the wing. They (not NASCAR) did the same thing to Jim Hall and his Chaparral after he started eating up all the competition on the road courses in the 60's...[:@]

NASCAR told Chrysler that they could either keep the winged warriors('69 Daytona/'70 Superbird) or the 426 Hemi, but not both. If they kept the winged cars, they would have to use a 305 CID or less motor. If the kept the 426 Hemi, they had to get rid of the winged wedge shaped cars, which they did. After NASCAR's continued rule changes, that ONLY applied to Chrysler, they said f[sm=smiley35.gif]k you to NASCAR and pulled out. NASCAR has continued this trend today by still keeping the ban on the Hemi, even the new one. Dodge asked and NASCAR said HELL NO!!![sm=smiley7.gif][sm=smiley21.gif]Cowards.[sm=smiley14.gif]

Yeah, that would mean Dale Jr. and Jeff Gordon would have to drive Dodges in order to continue to win...[sm=smiley36.gif]
