Default OEM water temp sender function?

How does the temp sender work on my '70 Cuda? The signal bounces with a range of 2 - 4 volts, and the range does vary with temp. How does the gauage read that signal?

Thanks,

Thanks Todd, I understand that its an NTC thermistor, I am interested in the reference signal generated by the voltage limiter? I need to understand how it functions. I want to be able to determine the temp by reading the signal from the sender. It constantly fluctuates. If I understand how the gauge interprets this bouncing signal, I can better determine how to inerpret the signal.

Thanks,

I look in my 69 manual tonight to see if there is an explaination for it. It's interesting that it only changes that much over the entire temp range.
