Power plant for 1973 Challenger
I have a '73 base model Challenger (318 2bbl / 904 Torqueflite / 8/75 rear w/ stock gearing - non-locking and 2.91 (?) gears). The 318 runs and has never been rebuilt. I was considering a performance rebuild, but I've been told that it is cheaper and better to drop a 5.9 crate engine in instead. Have any of you purchased a crate 360 from anywhere? What are your impressions of that motor regarding dependability and performance? I want something that lopes a little and can be converted to MP EFI at some point.
Do I need to upgrade the transmission? I rebuilt the 904 myself about 3 years ago with a shift kit, but it needs professional help. If I need to move up to a 727 now's the time rather than another rebuild.
Can I get a drop in center section for the 8 3/4 that has better gearing and SureGrip that would be a better option for this combo?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions and experiences.

Hey, Moparite. Thanks for responding.
A big block is a cool thing and I like the sound and response of the mountain motors. I had a '68 Charger with the 383 and it was a smooth running motor.
With my car, I'd have to change out most of the front end components and motor mounts and would definitely mean a tranny swap to drop a BB in there. The added expense of that work plus the price of the engine is more than my budget can handle. Plus, having driven an E body with a big block, I prefer the way the SB car handles. If I was planning to run fast in a straight line the BB is the way to go.
The 360 crates are Magnum engines and I want either those heads or some aluminum aftermarket heads. All things being equal, I would prefer a 340 to anything else - big bucks though.
