Default Challenger V.I.N.

I just bought a 340 Challenger. Every number checks except the dash V.I.N.. In the early '80's the guy ordered a dsah from Year One. It came with it's own V.I.N.. He didn't change it. The old dash is long gone. I tried to get it, it's gone. The dash number does not match the car but all the rest do including the build sheet. Is there anything I can do?

This doesn't sound right. I doubt you can buy a repop dash frame with a V.I.N. already attached. Does it look like an actual V.I.N.? I would guess the dash was swapped for lack of a clear title, or the car is stolen.

The VIN tag is part of the dash frame. If it doesn't match something fishy is up with the title. My guess would probably be a rebuilder, a car that was totaled by the insurance company and rebuilt. Year one DOES NOT sell dashes with VIN tags on them!
