Default 1971 Dodge Charger Steering

Hello, everyone. I'm new. I appreciate anyone that is able to help me with my new car. I recently bought a 1971 Dodge Charger 440 HP.

When the steering whell is turned about 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise it briefly clicks and feels as if it jumps. When this happend the car feels as if it loses steering control. Can anyone direct me a sto what the problem might be and/or how to fix it? If anyone knows of someone that works on these types of cars in the Akron, Ohio area, I would really like to get in contact with that person.

Thanks for all the help.

P.S. i added a picture of my charger...i think

Very nice car, I would duggest you have a local mechanic check out that steering issue, it might be something serious that can cause you to lose control of the car, and that wouldn't be a pretty outcome!

Welcome Charger71
The Power Stearing box on the Mopars has a small shuttle valve on the top where the pressure hose attaches.
The valve can get stuck or it can get contaminated by stuff in the fluid.

The way we use to check this in the old days ( remember I am old ) was to jack up the front end, put it on stands and start the engine let go of the wheel and see if the wheel turned right or left with no one touching it.
If it turned then you had to loosen bolts (just enough to allow movement the fluid will leak out sometimes) the valve and move it front or back to stop it from turning by it's self. very little movement of the valve made big difference,
Most Mechanics may know this depends on how long in the tooth he or she is. [:-]
