The over heating all depends on many different things. The first thing depends on what year the 440 is, the older ones have thicker cylinder walls and can be bored out more whereas the later 440's have thinner cylinder walls and cannot be bored as much. The thinner the cylinder wall the more heat will be transfered to the coolant and the more chance of over heating. Second is the compression, the more compression there is, the more heat it will generate. This also increases the octane requirement which increases heat, because the higher the octane is the longer/slower the fuel burns. Timing and carburation also have profound effects on engine temperature. The other more obvious things such as water pump, pulley sizes, radiator and fan play their parts as well.

Why are you wanting to use a newer more modern transmission, for fuel economy, performance, both, etc.?

That cylinder wall thing has been debated and debated, there was an article about it in a magazine (Mopar-----) and they sonic checked a whole bunch of blocks and it is a MYTH-there is no difference. .040 is fine. Passon Performance has all the 4 speed stuff you can ever want, they now have an overdrive gearset that goes into your case!! How cool.
