1974 Dodge Charger Oil Light Question
Hi folks,
This is my first posting. Had a question about the oil light on the 74 Charger.
This 74 Charger has less than 10,000 miles. It's in great shape. The oil light came on.....I checked the oil (within limits)...added some more (still within limits)....runs smooth...still the oil lights on.
I am a total novice when it comes to cars....totally new territory....Given this car's age, its condition, and my potential to screw things up quickly, I thought I'd ask the folks on this site what the next course of action should be....should I be looking into the Oil Pressure Sending Unit for instance, is this just a false alarm (doubtful), etc.
I'm respectfully requesting potential courses of action regarding this issue......
Thanks again,
EH

I would put a mechanical guage in the car or just hook it up to check and see if you really have a problem. The light will usually come on at 3-5 lbs. Thats very low and would mean you have a serious problem somewhere if it turns out to be right. Go with the mechanical to rule it out. You can find it at your local parts store for under 20 bucks plus maybe a few adapter fittings to fit it to your engine.
Hi,
I would suspect the pressure switch however, I agree that a mechanical gauge should be used to be sure. You can always mount the mech. gauge under the dash. If you are getting pressure on the mechanical gauge, then it is most likely a faulty sending unit and you should be able to get one from your local parts supply store. If the mech. gauge shows low or no pressure, then perhaps the oil pump itself is bad / defective or the pick-up tube may be at fault.
Hope that helps
