Default STEERING QUESTION

HAS ANYONE HAD NOISE FROM THE FRONT END WHILE BACKING OUT OF ,SAY, A DRIVEWAY THAT SOUNDS LIKE A LOUD POP OR CRUNCH AS YOU TURN THE WHEEL ?? SEEMS LIKE IT HAPPENS ONLY WHEN THE FRONT END DIPS AS THE WHEEL IS TURNED AT THE SAME TIME. THIS CAN'T BENORMAL.... ALSO, MY CHARGER IS SHOWING SIGNS OF FRONT PASS. SIDE TIRE WEAR ON THE OUTER MOST PART OF TIRE. I WAS TALKING TO ANOTHER SRT/CHARGER OWNER,AND TOLD ME HE HAS THE SAME ISSUE AND THE DEALER HAS BEEN PUTTING HIM OFF BECAUSE THE FIX IS MORE THAN JUST A TOE-IN OR TOE-OUT ADJUSTMENT,BUT RATHER A FRAME RE-ALIGNMENT!![:@]

My parents srt8 chargerhad the tire wear problem. The dealership covered the re-alignment but wouldn't warranty the worn out front tires even though the car only had 12000 miles on it at the time.As for the popping sound it still does it. Also a friend of mine has a srt8 300 his does it too, so it must have to do with theplatform the cars are on. I think the wide wheels put a weird bind on the steering rack or something.

on another note to the frame alignment, It does seem to me that some of these chargers seem to be built on a friday 5 mins befor quiting time. lol

I've found the charger/magnums are hard on tires. But the popping sound may be a tie rod issue. I've had to replace a few of those just because they are non greasable lubricated for life jobies.

As far as issue for an alignment... its not really a frame. but the engine cradle. Ussually its a toe and go. I haven't has to move the cradle as of yet. But who knows. these cars are getting older

THe popping sound (possibly a groan too) sounds like it might be the same thing I once saw on a Mustang. Turned out that the front struts were making noise due to the side loading as they compressed and rebounded. It must be the seal inside the strut that's rubbing on the cylinder harder due to the side load and it sticks, releases, sticks, releases, etc.

To check this, have someone back the car up slowly while turning (whatever situation makes the sound) and put your hand on the strut inside the wheel well. If this is the problem, you'll feel it!

Try not to tear your arm off.
