Default Gas Mileage

Has anyone else noticed that our cars get better gas mileage if driven more aggressively?

I've realized that if I drive my Charger "old man-ishly" (ie. slow, smooth acceleration from a stop), my gas mileage is somewhat under par. If I accelerate briskly up to speed (briskly not meaning flooring it), I get the opposite effect- my mileage is quite passable. On several occasions, I've even produced better mileage after blasting my car up and down a stretch of freeway for half an hour than I had driving it casually from one part of my small town to the other...*scratches head in confusion*

I have been averaging 14.5 mpg. I am happy with that.
