2006 Charger SRT-8 vs. 1969 Charger 426
I suppose it would all depend on what sort of gearing the '69 was running and for how long the race would go on for. The times for the old muscle cars can vary quite wildly due to the fact that most of them were pulled using the old-style bias-ply tires. If the '69 was equipped with a set of modern tires as well as the super-track-pack, I'd be willing to bet that it could beat an SRT-8 in the quarter mile. The 426 Hemi, though advertised as having 425 bhp, has been found to consistently generate around the 500 bhp ballpark in the top end. This, combined with a 4.10 axle ratio would give the old Charger a decisive edge in the quarter-mile seeing as how both cars are of similar weights. But who knows? Maybe the SRT-8s are underrated as well! I know for a fact that in an older issue Musclecar Review, a Hemi Challenger ran a 11.7 second quarter-mile in a "pure-stock" drag competition- just some food for though as the Challenger is quite near the weight of a Charger.
In the flying-mile however, the SRT-8 would certainly dominate over the regular '69 Hemi R/T due to aerodynamics and gearing. On the contrary though, a '69 Hemi Charger Daytona would quite likely trounce the SRT-8. I do believe that Buddy Baker was the one who drove a stock '69 Daytona up to a top speed of 211.7 MPH- certainly more than a match for the SRT-8s top speed of 170-ish MPH. Either way, it's a race I would love to see/participate in.
